The Boundless School
helps teens ac
complish extraordinary feats of learning by blending adventure,
high school curriculum, counselling and leadership development. Based on our
600 acre “classroom” in the Madawaska Highlands of Eastern Ontario,
working at Boundless can be an immensely challenging gig. Once described as
working in a M.A.S.H. unit, we strive to create an educational utopia for kids
who don’t fit anywhere else. We hold this M.A.S.H./UTOPIA contradiction close
to our often weary and proud hearts.
Our students are
regarded as being “at risk” because of their mental health and
learning challenges. They stay with us anywhere from 5-200 days in a year round
capacity.
We work hard. We
emphasize connecting with students above all else, and this often needs
courage.
The
spring/summer program
is mostly outdoor adventure based. We are river people, and we climb, hike or
go to remote wilderness. Helping students go home proud of themselves, with
greater resilience and more skills in their toolbox, is our reason for being.
In the fall
and winter, we are a boarding school, helping students not engaged by mainstream
education develop new relationships with achievement and learning.
Newly graduated
social workers, teachers and outdoor educators are a good fit for Boundless.
We value applicants
who present a history of working with older teenagers, experience facilitating
groups, counselling/mentoring and some professional track record in the
outdoors. Two of the above is sufficient to apply, three is better, and all
four is best.
We require a full
Class G or equivalent driver’s license. Being a strong swimmer is important.
All new staff,
typically aged 22-30 (average 25), join Boundless as PAID INTERNS
for four months starting May 1st each year. They earn a stipend of
$1500-$5,000, depending on what outdoor related credentials they bring to the
table.
Once staff
are finished their four month paid orientation, full time jobs are available, starting at $24,000/year
plus room and board, with the pay scale capping at $95,000/year.
