The
Stop Community Food Centre began over 30 years ago as one of North America’s first
food banks, and has grown into a vibrant community centre, using food as a tool
to addressing many issues, including poverty, the environment, social isolation

to addressing many issues, including poverty, the environment, social isolation
and health. For the past 7 seasons, The Stop has w
orked in partnership with
NaMeRes (Native Men’s Residence) to steward the Mashkikii;aki’ing (Medicine
Earth) Garden. Located at the corner of Gete-Onigaming (Davenport Rd.) and
Christie St. this garden hosts a medicine wheel garden where both food and
medicinal plants are cultivated.
We
are looking for an enthusiastic individual to facilitate activities at the
Mashkikii;aki’ing community garden and our greenhouse. The Garden Assistant
will work with the Maskikii;aki’ing Garden Coordinator to involve members of
the community and deliver garden programming. As part of the hiring process,
candidates selected for an interview will be required to register as a client
(or have already registered) with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and

Responsibilities:
Assist
the Mashkikii;aki’ing Garden Coordinator & Urban Agriculture Team in the
following tasks:

- Spring
seedling production in our Greenhouse - Co-facilitate
2-3 groups and work-bee sessions per week with participants from Native
Men’s Residence and community members - Lead
community garden members in garden stewardship tasks (planting, weeding,
watering, harvesting, composting, etc.) - Support
sister garden in the fall - Support
winter gardening activities at our greenhouse and through workshops - Conduct
outreach, promote garden projects and lead tours for visitors and groups - Assist
with community events and field trips - Conduct
program evaluations and maintain records - Meet
regularly with Stop Urban Agriculture team, other Stop staff and program
staff from our community partner, Native Men’s Residence
Qualifications:
- Must
register as a client (or have already registered) with Miziwe Biik
Aboriginal Employment and Training centre - Experience
working in gardens and using organic garden methods - Commitment
to social justice and knowledge of food system issues - Excellent
interpersonal and organizational skills - Facilitation
experience - Demonstrated
ability living and/or working in communities that experience poverty and
discrimination - Demonstrated
ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages,
abilities and cultural backgrounds, especially Indigenous communities) - Holding
a valid driver’s license is an asset
Salary:
$17/hr
