Carbon
and Climate change researcher
Saskatchewan
agricultural producers are facing dramatic impacts from a changing climate.
Extremes of precipitation and temperature, and increasing risk from new crop
diseases and invasive weeds are creating new challenges. This is in the context
of a growing demand for food in the world as production will need to increase
by 70% by 2050.
At
the same time, as Canada’s largest sector of private sector land managers,
farmers and ranchers are very influential in managing and sequestering carbon.
There is much potential for incremental carbon mitigation with improved
technologies and methods in both cropping and livestock.
APAS
proposes to help focus discussion on the significant potential that our sector
has to address these issues. We are developing plans to host an Agricultural
Carbon summit in 2017, to bring together researchers, producers and decision
makers. This Summit would focus on current science around issues like soil and
grassland carbon management, improvement in animal husbandry, and the potential
of new technologies to improve energy efficiency in agriculture and enhance
carbon storage on the landscape.
Over
six months, the researcher would assist with:
  • organizing
    the summit,
  • conduct
    a literature review on issues discussed above
  • write
    a report and recommendations based on summit proceedings
  • help
    develop communication products to communicate information to producers
    through all relevant media
  • assist
    with organizing regional meetings to convey the findings of the carbon
    project
The
succesful candidate will require strong research, writing and presentation
skills. The position would be funded through Employment Development Canada, and
candidates must meet the following criteria;
  1. Be
    a graduate from a post-secondary institution within the last three years;
  2. Be
    between the ages of 15-30 (inclusive at the start of the placement);
  3. Be
    a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or hold refugee status;
  4. Be
    legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation
    and regulations; and
  5. Not
    be in receipt of Employment Insurance at the start of your placement.
