Characteristics of Overpopulation

            Overpopulation is associated with several
undesirable conditions as a result of the increase in the number of existing
human population.  According to Carr
(2009)
some of the other characteristics of overpopulation include:
Ø 
Child poverty
Ø 
High birth rates
Ø 
Lower life expectancies

Ø 
Lower levels of literacy
Ø 
Higher rates of
unemployment, especially in urban
Ø 
Insufficient arable land
Ø 
Little surplus food
Ø 
Poor diet with ill health
and diet-deficiency diseases (e.g. rickets)
Ø 
Low per capita GDP
Ø 
Increasingly unhygienic
conditions
Ø 
Government is stretched
economically
Ø 
Increased crime rates
resulting from people stealing resources to survive
Ø 
Mass extinctions of plants
and animals as habitat is used for farming and human settlements
