Project
Description:
The Technical
Advisor – Agriculture and Livelihoods will work collaboratively with the key
stakeholders to design and implement livelihoods and food security
interventions. This position requires comprehensive understanding of and
experience in the areas of agricultural development, value chain activities,
private sector engagement and livelihoods with skills in capacity building and
technical provision. The position will be based in Malawi—most likely in
Lilongwe.
Job Summary
/ Responsibilities:
- Assist
with supervision and management of all food security program activities
while working to identify issues and risks related to project
implementation in a timely manner, and provide technical suggestions. - Provide
technical leadership in agriculture and livelihoods with expertise
including (but not limited to): food security programming; household food
access; nutrition; household and community resilience; poverty reduction;
rural economic development, agricultural development, agribusiness, market
systems or value chain development. - Provide
technical guidance in design, development, planning, implementation, and
capacity building for agriculture and livelihoods components of programs. - Provide
technical assistance to partner organizations on key agricultural and
value chain development concepts and principles. - Provide
day-to-day management of the project’s food security activities. - Manage
the work of any research firms and/or consultants hired by the project to
assist with food security strengthening approaches. This includes building
capacity of local implementing partners to implement quality and
successful work. - Collaborate
with other technical specialists and stakeholders beyond the project to
ensure coordination of materials and communication message strategies and
avoid gaps and overlaps. - Help
develop, maintain, and follow the indicators set in the work plan for
agriculture and livelihoods. - Work
with M&E Advisor to monitor and evaluate the progress and impact of
these activities. - Document
project results and impacts in various forms, including media stories,
lessons learned, case studies, client satisfaction, etc. - Other
duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- A
Master’s Degree in Agriculture Economics, Agribusiness, Nutrition,
International Development or related field. - At
least 6 years of experience in projects of similar or related nature,
size, and complexity, with national or local governments, NGOs, or donors;
preference given to a candidate who has demonstrated experience working in
devolved health settings. - Familiarity
and understanding of USAID policies and procedures (highly preferred), or
those of other donors, donor-funded projects, community-based projects, or
corporate social responsibility projects. - Proven
abilities to set priorities, to multi-task, and to work collaboratively
across technical disciplines. - Possess
outstanding professional reputation and have strong demonstrated interpersonal,
written, and oral presentation skills. - Well-developed
written and oral communication skills in English required, Chewa
preferred. - Minimum
5 years’ experience in Eastern and Southern Africa, and minimum of 3
years’ experience in Malawi preferred. - Experience
and demonstrated knowledge of livelihoods and agricultural development
programs and market systems approaches. - Knowledge
of and experience with the design, management and implementation of
nutrition, agriculture and livelihoods programs. - Ability
to organize systems to monitor results. - Ability
to work well with others and to develop and maintain compatibility among
project staff, subcontractors, consultants, and recipients of assistance. - Ability
to travel as needed.
