According to the Uganda’s State Minister for Tourism, Mr Godfrey, curvy and sexy Ugandan women are one of the most important tourism ‘products’ to attract tourists to the country. He made this statement at the launch of the popular Ugandan beauty pageant dubbed ‘Miss Curvy Uganda’.
The Minister promised to promote tourism in the East African country by tapping into the promotion of curvy and sexy Ugandan women as tourist products. In driving home his point he stated that women of Uganda are naturally endowed with nice looking women that are amazing to look at. He wonder why such gift from cannot by use as a strategy to promote the tourism industry of the country.
He further added that, “If you see a Munyankole woman with curves, there is a story behind that…It will be a beautiful event where young women will showcase their beautiful curves are intellect…Our beauty is not about slimy girls only.”
The comment of the minister has attracted several criticism from women from all works of life saying that the Miss Curvy Uganda is obviously a contest which is geared towards demeaning to women as it objectifies their bodies as sex objects.
This has prompted a petition which is championed by a Ugandan woman, Primrose Murungi, to have the Miss Curvy Uganda contest cancelled as the contest ridicule the women of Uganda. She regard the contest as a personal attack and a very degrading activity to the woman-folk. She buttressed her point by stating that Uganda is already country where women are grabbed by men while walking on the streets and now the comment of the minister is obviously a form of legalising the practice by making them a product of tourist attractions which is a situation she regarded as being unfair to Ugandan women.
Primrose Murungi has requested that the contest should be taken down and the minister should offers a public apology for coming up with such a demeaning initiative to Ugandan women.
In a petition signed by Primrose Murungi she stated that the Miss Curvy Uganda is aimed at reducing the Ugandan women to nothing but a sex tool.
