Having been a person of Indian roots, I enjoy the diversity of the traditional clothes of our culture. The saree is the one I miss the most. It has held an exceptional place in my heart. I have mixed and matched sarees on plenty of occasions, be it from official functions to informal hangouts, and have ended up being a fan of the wide range and the cuteness of this staple of all-time comfort wear. Through this content, I hope to expand my fashion sense by discovering new types of sarees. It is my goal to add to my understanding of the different categories of sarees for one’s perusal in India.
1. Banarasi Saree
The Banarasi saree is a narrow geographical area in Varanasi (earlier called Banaras), and among these, this is probably the most famous and luxurious type. A Banarasi silk saree is the most opulent silk saree in my experience. They are the best sarees, and I can tell you some of the below:
- Brocade works are in abundance, with gold or silver threads woven
- Most of the designs are complicated and are focused on flowers and paisley
- The silk is very thin and soft
- Thick and intense zari embroidery is very impressive
Banarasi is one of the different types of sarees and has also been made in pure silk, organza, and georgette until now.
2. Kanjivaram Saree
Kanjivaram sarees have their origins in Kanchipuram, in Tamil Nadu, and are the ones that have familiar designs and bold, beautiful colors on the smooth silk fibers. The Kenjivram saree was my grandma’s gift to me as a hand-me-down that used to be the piece I wore when I was growing up. Some of these wholesale saree characteristics are as follows:
- Bright, vivid frames and furs
- Quite broad, duet-red edge on a single or multi-color base
- Sanctuary designs
- Mulberry silk is natural
The Kanjivaram in the South of India can be categorized as a vintage Indian wedding saree.
3. Chanderi Saree
The Chanderi saree was named after the town Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, a state located in India, where it is said to have originated—the couture was of an exquisite light and thin character. My favorite brand is Chanderi because of its comfortable clothes and light designs. The attributes that are the most prominent among
- Naked colors and nearly transparent style
- Brought together silk and cotton material
- Zari borders and butis (small motifs) made with them
- The soft color shades of the motif design enhance subtlety
Chanderi is also available in various styles, having both silk and cotton.
4. Bomkai Saree
Orissa, the state of the weaving tradition, does justice to its weaving tradition. When I visited Orissa previously, I had the opportunity to witness the intricately designed looms used to weave Bomkai sarees. It contains
- Some parts of the saree are thicker and so can be made of cotton or silk fibers, in general
- A dyeing method, which gives the fabric a feel of a real tribal
- Ikat patterns and temple borders make the saree look genuine since they are a replica of Odisha tribal heritage
- Dark reddened and brown and such
On the other hand, people adore Bomkai due to its unique blend of traditional and contemporary methods.
5. Patola Saree
One of Gujarat’s most famous cities, Patola, is named after a cloth similar to those made there. The main advantage of using the ikat technique is the skill required to weave a beautiful saree. It happened that some time ago, being in India, I remember showing lovely sarees somewhere at a wedding, and later at work, one of my colleagues came up to me with a surprise that made me both laugh and, at the same time, happy. The following qualifications differentiate the sarees:
- The mix of flowers and geometrical figures in the print
6. Paithani Saree
I cannot recollect Paithani sarees without remembering a time when I wore one to my cousin’s wedding. I was told that the manufacturer of the saree and the artist who was embroidering the peacock motif took one day, and each saree took a lot of time. As a result, there were many compliments from people who liked them. - Normally, they are more colorful and deep and appear in quite bright leopard and emerald shades that are similar to those of precious stones.

The trip on the road to inland villages and towns in Maharashtra and Karnataka is not over if you do not visit the thousands of looms where skillful weavers are engaged in rising silken fabric into shawl-cum-sarees of different weaving and border designs. The luxurious Paithani weaving technology, besides being mule-drawn, is also the largest loom-based fabric manufacturer in India.
7. Bandhani Saree
Bandhini is one of the most popular designs, tied and dyed in Gujarat and Rajasthan. On one occasion, I was at a cultural festival where I saw many artists demonstrating this very clever thing. Bandhani sarees have such attributes as:
- Walnuts or rings tightly fastened for dyeing, creating the small undecorated print
- Fire-and-the-cold color mixtures
- From the simple to the impossibly difficult types, they may be patterned in any range
- You can choose from various fabrics, including silk, cotton, and georgette.
It is the Bandhani’s magic that makes it impossible for any machine to do perfect and unique designs.
8. Sambalpuri Saree
Sambalpuri sarees, which the Ikats represent, are the main traditional product of Odisha. During my participation in an Odisha handloom exhibition last year, I was startled when I saw the many intricate designs. The Sambalpuri sarees are the ones that:
- The traditional ikat weave is the main feature of the ire
- They are made with geometric and floral patterns
- Their colors are natural due to the use of plants for dyes
- The designs include the stories of gods and goddesses as gods’ good deeds and let us know them and love them as well
These sarees are soulful bearers of Odisha’s rich cultural threads and a piece of memorabilia.
9. Mysore Silk Saree
Mysore silk sarees are the most organic and, simultaneously, the most elegant in the entire silk industry. A dear friend gave me one that is still one of the most beautiful pieces I own. The following sarees are the ones that are in stock:
- Thin and lightweight silk material
- It’s only the color that is used to create the image of the dress
- The zari is the golden thread that is the main material used to the border and the pallu
- Of yolks, divine creatures, and the humblest flowers
The simplicity and the sophistication of the Mysore silk sarees suit every kind of formal and casual event and indeed any kind.
10. Pochampally Ikat Saree
Despite the different names of the places of origin, Pochampally Ikat sarees are entirely unique due to their mesmerizing geometric patterns. I once went to the weaving clusters in Pochampally and was deeply amazed by the weaving skills of the weavers. The following characteristics distinguish these sarees:
- The ikat technique is unique to them, in which they use only the strings that are specially tied and woven to make the patterns
- You can use them in both silk and cotton varieties
