A midnight fire at an Islamic school located in Paynesville, on the outskirts of the Liberian capital, Monrovia has reportedly left 27 children dead.
According to Aljazeera, the tragic event occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 18. The incident was verified by Moses Carter, who is the spokesman for the police.
He said that when the fire broke out, the children were learning the Quran, and that only the Imam, the teacher, and two children escaped. The police had to fight a large crowd of wailing family members and sympathizers to gain access to the building.
According to the BBC, some of the victims ‘ bodies are still being searched for by the police.
The eyewitness Pastor Emmanuel Herbert said when he noticed the fire, he raised alarm.
