A cabinet meeting, chaired by President Paul Kagame on Tuesday 16 June, named Marie-Claire Mukasine as the new chair of the National Human Rights Commission.
Mukasine is replacing Madeleine Nirere who ended her two four-year terms at the rights body’s helm last month.
After completing her final term, Nirere had handed over to her former vice spokesperson, Silas Sinyigaya on May 8.
Mukasine has previously served in various capacities including the Senate and the Ministry of Infrastructure as permanent secretary.
Prior to that, she served as the managing director of Sonarwa, the country’s oldest insurance firm, and as head of Rwanda Investment group.
She has also previously worked in various public institutions as a judge and as a lawyer.
Mukasine has also worked in civil society, including in a Haguruka body for the protection of women and children’s rights, which she led from 1994 to 1996.
She holds a Masters of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Laws degree
