During their first year on campus, a group of six learners from African Leadership University were challenged by their leaders to work on a business idea that would see them creating job possibilities for other youth out there.
According to them, they would create it, or so they believed, because of the abilities, thoughts, resources, and the time they had as learners.
Surprisingly, when they began to work on the concept that used certain raw materials to create documents, they ended up doing more than six tests without the required product coming up
This was the time, resources and energy they consumed.
Later, it came to their attention that they had less knowledge of how to do things and at the same time hadn’t done enough studies on what to do.
“First of all, we didn’t have knowledge on how to develop a business plan, market our products and convince people to buy what we were to make,” says Kevin Shema, one of the students.
While teachers are unable to provide learners with everything in research, educators believe that students can not manage everything on their own.
The issue is, how should teachers guarantee that teachers are helped with educational research?
Educators are one of the main components in educational organisations, particularly when it comes to efficient learning, according to Aime Prince Lionel Murara, the deputy domestic coordinator in charge of activities and partnership in Education for Nations and Humanitarian Africa (ENHA).
He notes that one of the educators ‘ main tasks is to assist learners learn how to address fresh and emerging issues, as well as being able to combine various views to achieve the objectives of the learners.
“They should focus on finding and using information successfully, which is an essential skill for life and work to any learner inside and outside the school environment,” he says.
Murara, however, claims the excellent news is that learners can be ahead of educators in finding fresh stuff in this 21st century.
Learners have more information at their fingertips than before, which means the teacher can just come in to guide them, he says.
Depending on the learners era, Diana Nawatti, the head teacher at Mother Mary Complex School in Kigali, thinks it’s essential to opt for an activity involving all students in the school, adding that a teacher can decide whether they’re going to be teachers or student-centered learning.
She describes that this is crucial because it helps the teacher find out what their learners really need to work with and come up with meaningful things.
She points out that educators should know that it is essential to educate learners on studies, and it makes things simpler on both sides when the above is noted
Nawatti also points out that creating time for this specific activity is essential.
According to her, this helps and provides students sufficient time to concentrate on data analysis and synthesis rather than study process mechanics.
Another point, says the head teacher, is that it’s also common to find out that most learners end up having confidence in everything they get from the internet, as most of them don’t take time to fully assess their sources.
When enough time is provided with teacher guidance, she suggests that it is simple for learners to come up with appropriate and well-researched concepts that will assist not only in college but also when faced with the actual globe..
She adds that it is the teacher’s role to ensure that whatever the learners are seeking is safe and educational, depending on a student’s era.
Freedom Kabera, a law student at Kigali University, believes that teachers should flourish in helping learners by finding and obtaining excellent and reliable study sources.
When it comes to secondary research, he says it’s easy to find information that is not accurate and sometimes may not have the facts, and this is where an educator comes in to guide students.
Alternatively, he says, it’s important for institutions to subscribe to learning materials for their students and even have a well-equipped library that will see students succeed as far as educational research is concerned.
“Educators should learn how to be patient and resilient, keeping in mind that there are challenges when it comes to such assignments,” adds Kabera.
In order to obtain excellent teaching, Nawatti points out that the skillful use of well- chosen issues for engaging and challenging learners and consolidating knowledge is an significant characteristic, as is the efficient use of appraisal learning, particularly in studies.
Murara says,“Rwanda’s education is perfectly observed to be on a progressive advancement. Students in primary and secondary schools are able to carry out different research methodologies by the aid of computers, tablets, and libraries.”
The main purpose of the research, he says, is to get deep into the topic so that something helpful can be churned out, which can be helpful for everybody and used in that particular niche sector.
“Many students do not understand that research is an important aspect in their academic enrolment,” Murara says.
This is why educators should make every effort to create a wall of inspiring encouragement to help learners on their route of carrying out various study actions.
This, he says, can be done by providing periods meant for research, especially regarding various courses.
“Research is not only helpful to students because teachers are also able to easily understand the students’ views, which is, therefore, simultaneously beneficial,” he says.
Alphonse Uworwabayeho, a mathematics lecturer at the University of Rwanda, suggests that teaching learners with no concept of the subject is more difficult than getting some understanding of what to teach.
Therefore, he suggests this is why educators should make it easier for learners to improve themselves with a strong enclosure towards different study methodologies.
Meanwhile, Murara states that study material insufficiency is the first challenge that prevents further development of studies.
In some schools, he says, there is low or no access to libraries as well as computer devices to support them with research.
In addition, Uworwabayeho points out that precision is also a challenge because the data is supplied by individuals, primarily on websites, and there is no guarantee of significance or precision.
“This is why analysis and critical thinking are both necessary in carrying out research,” he notes.
As far as research among learners is concerned, the lecturer suggests that inaccuracy and resource insufficiency result in gaps aimed at limiting study effectiveness .
On the other side, Murara suggests that professors are also regarded among the research’s significant beneficiaries.
He says,” this can be highlighted under the fact that there is a big difference between the yield of a teacher who does research and a teacher who doesn’t do research.”
“Knowledge has no limitations; different sources can, therefore, be gathered to shape smart students, ready to stand against different challenges facing the world, under the surveillance of an educator,” adds Murara.
