Causes of polycystic ovary syndrome

Women who are overweight and who experience heavy or irregular menstruation may be at danger of syndrome with polycystic ovary.

According to Michel Baingi, a general physician in Kigali, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent  endocrine disorder among females of reproductive age and influences the hormone concentrations of about four to twelve per cent of females. Women with PCOS generate male hormones that are higher than normal. This hormone imbalance leads to menstrual periods being skipped, making it difficult to get pregnant.

He claims it is unknown the underlying cause of PCOS. However, it is assumed that a genetic foundation is multi-factorial as well as polygenic. In particular, there has been an enhanced incidence among impacted people, their siblings and mothers.

Study shows that many females have PCOS but don’t understand it, about 70% of women with PCOS were not  diagnosed in one research.

He adds that PCOS is a syndrome that impacts ovaries and ovulation, or a group of diseases. Its three primary  characteristics are: ovarian cysts, elevated male hormone concentrations, irregular or skipped times.

Baingi describes that whether hypothalamic dysfunction is a main cause of PCOS or secondary to abnormal steroid  feedback is presently unknown.

 Signs and symptoms

He describes that complaints may have diverse endocrine impacts in females with PCOS and may include  menstrual irregularities (absence of ovulation prohibits the uterine lining from shedding every month. Some females with PCOS receive less than eight periods a year), infertility, Excess androgen or other endocrine dysfunction manifestations. Within a few years of puberty, symptoms become classically evident.

Baingi claims high concentrations of male hormone can lead to physical indications such as surplus facial and body  hair (hirsutism) and irregularly serious baldness of acne and male pattern The ovaries could be expanded with follicles surrounding the eggs. The ovaries may fail to operate commonly as a consequence.

He points out that heavy bleeding can also be a sign of PCOS, as the uterine lining builds up for a longer period of  time, so a woman’s period can be shorter than usual.

“Male hormones can make the skin oilier than usual and cause breakouts on areas like the face, chest, and upper back, another symptom can also be weight gain. Up to 80 per cent of women with PCOS are overweight or obese. Hormone changes can also trigger headaches in some women,” he says.

Baingi states that over time, these signs and symptoms may differ commonly among females and among people.

He adds that there are many ways in which hormone imbalances can influence the health of a woman. PCOS may  boost the danger of infertility, metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, cancer of the endometrium, and depression.

 Diagnosis

Dr. Mohamed Okasha, a gynaecologist obstetrician at Legacy Clinics, says physicians diagnose PCOS if females have at least two of three primary symptoms — elevated concentrations of androgen, uneven periods, and ovarian cysts.  The diagnosis can be confirmed by a pelvic examination, blood tests and ultrasound.

He also notes that if you have a PCOS diagnosis, your doctor may recommend extra complications tests. Periodic blood pressure controls, glucose tolerance, cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations, depression and anxiety screening, and obstructive sleep apnea screening may be these tests.

Treatment

Baingi describes that the selection of therapy depends on the objectives of a woman and the severity of endocrine  dysfunction for each symptom of PCOS. Thus, an ovulatory female who wants pregnancy will be treated differently from teenagers with menstrual irregularity and acne.

He suggests patients often seek therapy for a unique complaint and may see different experts from dermatologists,  nutritionists, aesthetics, and endocrinologists before a gynaecologist (surgical) assessment.

He notes that by doing exercises, weight can be lost.

Okasha says, any diet that helps you lose weight can help your condition. However, some diets may have advantages over others. Studies comparing diets for PCOS have found that low-carbohydrate diets are effective for both weight loss and lowering insulin levels.
