LAUTECH student slumps and died while exercising

A 100-level student at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso was reported dead after slumping at the school’s sports complex during an exercise.

The student, recognized as the Department of Biochemistry’s Moyosore Akinde, allegedly collapsed during weekend jogging.

The deceased died on his way to the health centre.

The institution’s vice-chancellor, Micheal Ologunde, has requested a three-day closure of the institution’s sports center in honor of the dead.

Mr Ologunde, who defined the death as another black episode in the university’s history, said it was a painful event.

“We never anticipated this at a moment when our learners were just going back for academic pursuits, at a moment when we were aiming for an unbroken academic calendar.

“At this moment our prayer was for God to give his relatives and friends the courage to bear this irreparable loss, while stopping all these unfortunate incidences in LAUTECH.”

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Akin Fadeyi, who also confirmed the incident, added that it is not yet known the cause of death.

Mr Fadeyi in a telephone interview with on Wednesday said Mr Akinde died on his way to the institution’s heath centre at the weekend.

He added that the incident occurred at the weekend and not on Monday as being speculated.

“Akinde Moyosore Abdul slumped. He died on his way to the health centre. What really happened is still unknown because he died on his way to the health centre. The incident occurred during the weekend and not on Monday.

“Had it been that he made it to the health centre, the doctors would have told us the cause of his death. You know that LAUTECH is a non-residential institution and, everybody has access to the sport facilities.

“He is not the only one that has been using the facilities. But, no one can say what happened,” the official said.

Mr Akinde’s death is coming barely five weeks after two students of the university lost their lives in a road accident.
