Immigration Service begins issuance of 10-year e-passport in Lagos

At its Ikoyi office in Lagos, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced plans to begin issuing the fresh improved 10-year e-Passport to qualified candidates.

The roll-out has already started in Abuja, according to the NIS Comptroller-General, Muhammad Babandede, but the issuance of the new passport will start on Tuesday (today), June 25.

On April 29, the NIS announced the start of registering for the issuance to Nigerians of its fresh 10-year e-passports.

President Muhammadu Buhari introduced the e-passport on January 16th.

The cost of the normal 5-year passport of 32 pages is N25,000, while the standard 5-year passport of 64 pages costs N35,000.

The normal passport of 64 pages for 10 years costs N70,000.

President Buhari has already completed the roll-out in Abuja

“We hope the governor will come on June 25, 2019 and work with the Assistant Comptroller-General here to roll out the new passports in Ikoyi,” the official said.

The NIS boss said that Lagos is the second place to be rolled out the new improved passport.

Mr Babandede said candidates must first have a National Identity Number and be aware of their identification on both papers as well.

“We call on Nigerians to be very conscious of their identity. You cannot get this passport unless you have a National Identity number, without that, don’t even approach it.”

He urged  Nigerians with a distinct identity to ‘ reconcile ‘ this with their NIN before they arrive.

He said the National Identity Card Management Commission (NIMC) has offered tools that will assist synergy between both government agencies.

“We are happy to say that NIMC has provided for facilities, working with us here in Ikoyi passport office, just like in Abuja and I hope they do same abroad, so that wherever we are rolling out a passport, national identity will be available.
