Graduation of 200 Students who completed US Embassy’s English Access Program

The US Ambassador to Rwanda, Peter H. Vrooman, honored 200 students at a graduation ceremony in Nyanza on  Friday that completed the English Access Microscholarship Program of the Embassy.

The English Access Program is an Embassy-funded two- year program that offers 400 hours of additional English lessons and instructional events for learners..

The program enables learners attain their academic and professional objectives by acquiring the English language  skills they need.

“Today, you join a global community of more than 1.5 billion people who speak English, either as a native language or through study,” U.S. Ambassador Peter Vrooman told students from Nyanza, Save, Kibeho, and Rulindo at the graduation ceremony.

“Being part of this community will broaden your professional and personal horizons,” the Ambassador added. “It will make you able to communicate with the widest audience in the world.”

Ambassador Vrooman provided the highest attaining learners with certificates. Also attending were school officials  and the relatives of learners.

The graduation ceremony culminated in a three-day capstone camp where learners from all four English Access places met for cultural enrichment and language  learning in Nyanza.

The English Access Microscholarship Program is the US Embassy Public Affairs Section’s biggest and most  successful outreach program to engage and develop rural Rwandan youth capabilities through English teaching, instructional, cultural, and personal growth operations.

The program offers talented youth between the ages of 13 and 20 with a base of English language skills.

Since its founding in 2004, the English Access Program has involved over 110,000 learners in more than 80 nations. The access program was announced in Rwanda in 2010.

More than 800 learners from Rwanda have participated in the program since then. To implement the program, the US Embassy is partnering with the Congrégation des Soeurs Benebikira.
