Ghanaian president speaks on demolition of Nigerian High Commission’s building

President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana spoke with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, expressing his heartfelt regret for the demolition of a building on the premises of the High Commission of Nigeria in Accra , Ghana.

The Ghanaian leader told President Buhari in a telephone call that he has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, explained in a statement by presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

The statement said several suspects had been detained earlier in the day, and would be arraigned in court.

Earlier media report shows how the Foreign Ministry of Ghana apologized to the government of Nigeria for the building attack.

The building in the Ghanaian capital was reportedly attacked by some armed men on Friday night, damaging some apartments under construction.

Ghanaian media reported that a businessman had earlier accused the high commission of encroaching on his land.

The demolished building was recently bought by the Embassy of Nigeria.

Angered by the incident, some Nigerians in the country protested the destruction, calling on the Ghanaian authorities to act.

Videos of demonstrators lamenting how the armed men burst into and demolished the building.

Ghana’s foreign affairs ministry said in a press release that it considers the act as a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations – an international treaty that establishes a structure for diplomatic ties between countries.

It expressed regret at the demolition and said; “Investigations are ongoing to unravel the facts of the matter and bring perpetrators to book. Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has beefed up security at the said facility and the situation is under control.”

“While expressing regrets over the incident, the Ministry wishes to reassure the diplomatic community in Ghana and the Nigerian High Commission in particular that Ghana remains a law abiding country that upholds the principle of the rule of law.”
