Four Musanze local officials re-arrested for assaulting citizens

Two grassroots leaders and two members of the District Administration Security Support Department (DASSO) working in Musanze District have been re-arrested for allegedly bribing and attempting to escape justice.

On 14 May 2020, the suspects were arrested for alleged assault and battery on two district residents who allegedly ignored wearing face-masks as a guideline in place to counter coronavirus spread.

The suspects include Jean Paul Sebashotsi Gasasira – the executive secretary of Cyuve Sector, Jean Léonidas Tuyisabimana – the executive secretary of Kabeza Cell from the sector, while Anaclet Nsabimana and Sylvain Abiyingoma are officers under DASSO.

They had been granted bail by Musanze Intermediate Court on Wednesday, June 10, pending the substantive trial.

The bail was issued to them on appeal, they had previously been remanded by Muhoza Primary Court following a lower court.

However, one day after they were given bail for trying to escape justice and corruption, the officials were re-arrested, RIB spokeswoman Marie Michelle Umuhoza reported without specifying the circumstances in which the suspects were charged.

“It is true, they (suspects) were all re-arrested for allegedly attempting to escape from justice and a separate charge of corruption,” she briefly said

Umuhoza went on to say that the suspects were currently detained at RIB- Muhoza Station from Musanze City Centre.

The suspects were initially caught in a video that went viral on social media sites, beating two locals who allegedly violated the order for wearing face-masks.

The accused were vividly seen in the video battering the victims in the public along Musanze-Kinigi road with some residents begging on behalf of the victims for mercy.
