Electrical Technologist – EngineeringReporting to the Director of Engineering, the Electrical Technologist – Engineering provides technical and electrical system design services throughout the project cycle, from conceptual design through to commissioning. Work is structured by Canadian technical standards, including the electrical code, CSA standards, IEEE, etc., safety standards as well as Corporate/GN financial management, HR, purchasing policies and procedures. A low degree of supervision is associated with the position, as the Director assigns general priorities; however, within these parameters, the Electrical Technologist – Engineering controls his or her own pace of work, and has direct authority over decisions such as developing preliminary designs and changing draft designs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Providing detailed design and project costing for distribution system upgrading
• Providing detailed design and protective device coordination services for generation and distribution systems
• Writing technical specifications and preparing design packages for the procurement of various pieces of electrical equipment such as switch gear, power transformers, and gensets
• Providing technical support and electrical design reviews for projects in the Engineering and Operations departments
• Coordinating line crews and sub-contractors with on-site technical support for capital projects
• In cooperation with the Engineer, reviewing design and equipment specification to ensure that projects meet all regulatory and QEC compliance standards
• Working to find solutions to ongoing issues that impact service delivery
• Preparing and submitting proposals for consideration by the QEC Board
• Working with the Project Accountant to ensure that capital projects are on budget and on schedule, and preparing cost analyst to ensure that capital projects fall within budgetary requirements
• Providing rationales for cost over-run or adjusted time lines for project completion
• Coordinating with the Purchasing Department to ensure that material resources are procured and in place on schedule for project launch
• When necessary, providing on-site solutions in situations warranting re-design or modifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
• 3-year Technologist Diploma
• 5 years of experience, including experience with high-voltage, bulk power distribution/transmission
• Experience working in remote locations
• Experience in full scope project management
• Background in diesel-generated power or technology
• Ability to prepare and submit proposals to senior management
• 2 years of experience in designing and costing projects
• Ability to handle complex situations and provide concrete solutions such as solving protection and control problems while maintaining reliability on systems that may be overloaded

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including a Northern Living Allowance of $15,016 per year. The competition will remain open until the position is filled.
Preference will be given to beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.
