Delta State records 532 COVID-19 cases, orders offices decontamination

As of June 23, a top aide to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has announced, Delta State has recorded 532 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The announcement was made in Asaba Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor, Olisa Ifeajika.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Ifeajika said that since the disease was reported in the state the pandemic had gulped a huge chunk of government revenue.

He said the government made huge financial commitments to safeguard citizens, but lamented that people in the state had committed gross violations of the safety guidelines.

He said several state residents failed to adhere to safety protocols, aimed at further checkmating the virus’ spread.

The spokesperson said that with 382 active cases, 20 deaths were reported in the state, while 130 patients were discharged from isolation centres.

Mr. Ifeajika recalled that the State Government Secretary (SSG), Mr. Chiedu Ebie, and the Information Commissioner, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, were among those who tested positive for the disease.

“Based on this development, the governor directed decontamination of the offices of the SSG, ministry of information and that of the CPS because of their close affinity.’’

The spokesperson said most government meetings in the state had been virtual, in a bid to check the spread of the virus.

He confirmed that at the isolation center the SSG and the commissioner were in good condition, urging those who regarded COVID-19 as a fluke to have a rethink.

A disease that has infected the entire world, he says, can not be defined as scam.

“As at today, workers on levels 10 and below have been asked to stay at home all in a bid to stem the tide of the pandemic.”

Mr Ifeajika advised people to stick to regular hand washing protocols on running water, wearing face masks and using hand sanitizers.

“As the governor has constantly said, if you do not have a very important reason to go out, you should stay at home. Otherwise, make your contacts with your phone.”
