Bandari midfielder bags KPL player of the month award

Former zoo playmaker Danson Chetambe is the month’s May-June footballer from the LG- Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (Sjak).

Chetambe, who has since quit the club and joined Kenyan officials in the Caf Confederations Cup Bandari, assisted  Zoo escape relegation last season by a whisker with his five objectives scored in the month to complete two slots over the red line.

The scintillating shape of the midfielder prompted Bandari to sign him before the squad took part in the  tournamernt Cecafa Kagame Cup in Rwanda.

He netted five times in nine games throughout the month. His impressive tally assisted Zoo to gain 15 out of a  possible 27 points and thus retain their top flight status. Zoo recorded three wins, four drawings, and twice lost

“I am so happy to win this award. It was a tough month because we were fighting relegation, I am honoured that my effort has been recognized today though not with Zoo but now at Bandari,” Chetambe said after receiving the award on Monday after the team’s morning session training at  Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa.

“I’m hoping to carry on the good performance with Bandari and help my new team win titles this season. It’s going  to be a tough season since we have the Confederation Cup, the league, Super Cup and also defending the SportPesa Shield. I’m enjoying my stay in Bandari and I promise our fans good results.” he added.

Chetambe helped Zoo to see off Ulinzi Stars and Western Stima with comparable 2- 1 score lines before Kakamega Homeboyz 3-2 was humiliated.

The club worked on a barren draw with Sony FC and collected more points from a one- all draw against AFC Leopards and two-all stalemates against former Tusker champions and then KCB returned from the league

A 3-1 and 3- 0 loss to Mathare United and league runners up Bandari respectively slowed their quest to stay in the elite league during the month.

Coming up against players who had performed similarly during the month, Chetambe won 19 votes in a Sjak-led poll, two ahead of Tusker winger Boniface Muchiri who came second

Fast- rising Tusker striker David Majak and hitman Enosh Ochieng from Ulinzi Stars completed third and fourth respectively with 15 and nine points.

Chetambe’s goal- scoring instincts paid dividends as Bandari meets his signature with a number of interested outfits and made his debut in the Cecafa Kagame Cup in Rwanda, which was recently completed. After Kakamega Homeboyz midfielder Peter Thiong’o, Abdalla Hassan (Bandari), Justin Ndikumana (Sofapaka) and former  Sofapaka goal poacher Umaru Kasumba, Chetambe becomes the sixth recipient of the prize this season.
