Another Federal University Oye Ekiti student dies from gunshot injury

Another Federal University  Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), student named Joseph Icon, died on Wednesday morning.

The deceased was one of the victims who suffered gunshot injuries at a protest on Tuesday, according to Students Union President, Awodola Oluwaseun.

“Another student just died this morning. I am on my way there but I’m scared because police are on the street beating up any FUOYE student at sight,” he said.

The victim was a 300-level student and a campus comedian, journalists learnt.

Ojo Raymond, president of the hospital’s National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), told reporters that the deceased died at the Federal Medical Center in Ido, Ekiti State.

Media reports said the students protest turned violent after police officers sporadically shot at students trying to have a conversation on poor electricity at the institution with Ekiti State Governor Bisi Fayemi’s wife.

Previously, Oluwaseyi Kehinde, a 100-level student, was confirmed dead.

The spokesman for the school, Godfrey Bakri, said when contacted, he was unaware of the deaths. He told journalists that before addressing the press, he needed to get instruction from his principal.

Police spokesman Caleb Ikechukwu also insisted that he was unwilling to talk to the media about death.

Mr Ikechukwu had claimed that no gunshots were fired at the incident.

In order to pay tribute to the slain students, many students stormed the social media.

On Tuesday, the Ekiti government issued a statement saying that the convoy of Mrs Fayemi was attacked and that it “has been informed that there might have been casualties recorded during the incident.”

The institution’s management also ordered the school to be closed indefinitely and the union to be banned.
