DIY Tips for A Colourful Home

Whether you are going to sell your property or just renovating as part of the general maintenance, painting your property is a regular task you have to perform every few years. Painting the right colour and following the right procedures can change the view and reflection of your property in your neighbourhood. Taking the DIY project of painting your house can save you a lot of money and time, and it will enable you to learn a new skill, as well as give you better mental satisfaction.

If you don’t want the hassle of DIY house painting, you can hire a professional painting company , or you can paint yourself to enhance your creativity. Then, there are several key issues to consider and finish properly to get that professional and elegant look.

Vision

The first and most important thing for house painting is developing a vision for the work. You need to list your ideas and thoughts accordingly. You need to consider several factors before finalising a theme for your house. If you are painting your house interior, then you need to consider whether that area is exposed to sunlight or other light sources, or if that surface is an inner area where the intensity of surrounding light is very low.

Colour Theme

Colour selection is another important factor and is vital for a successful painting job. Normally, light colour can be applied anywhere, but you need to take extra care when using a dark colour theme. Dark colour should only be used in a room or place where there are plenty of windows or enough space for light reflection.

If you are confused about choosing a colour theme, then you can become more creative by taking digital pictures of the surface and then editing them with your photo editing software, which can make it easier regarding colour selection.

Paint Colour and tools

You should always go for the paint of the highest house painting quality, which is vital for a superior polish. Glossy paint can be easier to maintain, but it makes the blemishes on the wall more visible. In contrast, flatter paint is more suitable for large wall areas and corridors, but is not always easy to clean.

You will need some DIY painting tools, including rollers, brushes of various sizes suitable for your surface, a corner painter, foam brushes, an edger, a wallpaper finishing brush, as well as trays and bowls for colour mixing. Before buying any paint, you need to make a rough estimate by measuring your total surface area to be painted.

Preparations and the Process

Before beginning the painting work, you need to prepare your house for painting. You need to move your furniture and cover your flooring. You have to scrub the walls for a thoroughly clean surface by sanding and scraping. Also, you need to fill any holes or imperfections thoroughly.

Then you can apply a primer or undercoat to make the surface ready for the colour paint. It is better to cut in first with a brush to stay on the safe side. After that, you can use any roller for a wider surface. Once you finish applying the paint on the surface and the roller is almost dry, a useful idea is to go back over the whole area in long, even strokes to make an even finish.

Between the coats, you can use sandpaper on the painted wall once the paint is dry for an extra smooth finish. If you use painter’s tape, then it is better to remove it after the paint is completely dry.

Finally, you should clean your used brush, bowl, tray, roller, and roller cover thoroughly, which will be very handy if you are planning to reuse these tools. Lastly, clean the area thoroughly, put the room furniture back together and enjoy the new look!
