development and work closely together with the Dutch agribusiness.

Agriterra
Rwanda is registered as a program under SNV Rwanda and our team cooperates with
farmers’ organizations and cooperatives, in the value chains of coffee, dairy,
maize, rice, sugar cane, horticulture and Irish potato. We aim to
professionalize their functioning and service provision to their members, where
the members want to increase their productivity and income, their position in
the markets, access to finance and to add value to their products. Agriterra
Rwanda is part of Agriterra’s Great Lakes team, which hence is part of
Agriterra’s East Africa team.
Agriterra
offers business advisory services to cooperatives with its international
Business Advisory Team, while tapping into the competences of Dutch cooperative
experts, called Agripoolers, derived from Agriterra’s constituency of various
agricultural cooperatives in The Netherlands.
Famer
organizations and cooperatives that want to improve the service provision to
their members e.g. on extension, can count on Agriterra. Furthermore, Agriterra
supports farmer organizations in developing effective lobby which results in a
more favorable business climate for farmers
The
Agriterra team offers advice, training and study tours to farmer organizations
and cooperatives. Most training is provided by professionals from the Dutch
agricultural sector and agribusiness. These are farmer specialists, members and
employees from farmer organizations and cooperative companies, as well as
Agriterra staff.
POSITION
SUMMARY
Agriterra
is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Business Advisor to offer
business advisory services to cooperatives that have been selected as Agriterra
clients. The Business Advisor will be based at Agriterra’s office in Musanze,
under the wings of farmer’s organization Imbaraga, but will work closely with
his/her colleagues in Kigali. Agriterra and Imbaraga’s Cooperative Development
in Irish Potato project will be managed by the Business Advisor, in close
collaboration with Imbaraga’s Junior Business Advisor who will be in an
implementing role. In addition to the Irish Potato project, the Business
Advisor will have his/her own portfolio of Agriterra clients, notably in the
value chains of horticulture, ware and seed potato and coffee. In the execution
of cooperative action plans, the Business Advisor will work closely with
professionals from the Dutch agricultural sector. These are farmer specialists,
members and employees from farmer organizations and cooperative companies, as
well as Agriterra staff.
Responsibilities:
  • To
    facilitate and accompany peer-to-peer advisory assignments conducted by
    experts stemming from the Dutch agribusiness in support to farmers’
    organizations and cooperatives in Rwanda, DRC and abroad;
  • To
    monitor developments and progress of Agriterra clients based among others
    on jointly established yearly targets and key performance indicators
    written down in yearly action plans;
To
give follow-up and advice to clients on at least three of the following topics:
  • Governance
    and internal management
  • Financial
    management
  • General
    proper recording (membership, volumes produce, minutes, etc.)
  • Communication
    and reporting
  • Extension
    services
  • Marketing
    and input provision
  • Business
    practices
  • Value
    chain development;
To
conduct scoping and company/organization assessments of potential clients;
  • To
    conduct relevant sectorial studies and update existing documents;
  • To
    keep updated Agriterra information systems on clients and contribute to
    knowledge management of Agriterra:
  • each
    client: action plans, missions, field visits, communication
  • potential
    loan providers
  • legal
    and tax framework
  • Potential
    local experts/consultants.
Profile:
  • Master
    degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics or related studies;
  • Fluent
    in English, French and Kinyarwanda, preferably able to speak Kiswahili;
  • Flexible
    (no 9-5 mentality), able and willing to frequently travel to rural places
    in Rwanda and DRC and incidentally to The Netherlands and other East
    African countries;
  • Experience
    as project manager or business advisor for cooperatives;
  • Knowledge
    of the functioning of farmer-led enterprises and organizations;
  • Computer
    literate (SharePoint, MS Office, preferably accounting software);
  • Diplomatic
    skills to develop partnership with governmental and business entities;
  • Committed
    to smallholder farmers’ economic development;
  • Appreciative
    communication skills and attitude;
  • A
    can-do mentality;
  • Respectful
    and patient attitude, pro-active, convincing and target-driven;
  • Self-geared
    (able and willing to work independently);
  • Generalist:
    eager to learn other topics and expand skills;
  • Having
    specific knowledge of a particular value chain or experience in working
    within a farmers’ organization will be of added value.
