A man in Ethiopia who was believed to be 114 years old has recovered from Coronavirus.
The family of Aba Tilahun Woldemichael claims he is 114 but there is no certificate of birth to validate his age.
Dr. Hiluf Abate, who handled Aba at Yeka Kotebe hospital, told the BBC Newsday program that he tested positive for the virus when a random screening process took place in his neighborhood in Addis Abeba, the capital.
Within four days of his admission to Yeka Kotebe hospital’s severe coronavirus ward, the health of Aba Tilahun worsened as the virus took hold and he was placed on oxygen, Dr Hiluf said.
The centenarian spent 14 days at the hospital, he says, and was treated with oxygen for more than a week.
He said: “It’s really incredible that he survived being so old and we are happy that he has been discharged.”
The Yeka Kotebe hospital said they couldn’t confirm that their patient is 114 years old, but the medical staff said he’s certainly over 100 and he’s believed to be 109 years old.
His 24-year-old grandson Binyam Lulseged Tilahun is now being looked after at home by Aba Tilahun Woldemichael.
Mr Binyam added that given his age his grandfather is stable and doing well, but his voice has been affected by the virus’ after-effects.
More than 5,000 confirmed cases and 81 coronavirus deaths have been reported in Ethiopia.
