East African Community member states unveil budgets

The budget for Uganda amounted to about 1.1 trillion Kenya shillings while the budget for Rwanda is 359 billion Kenya shillings and 1.4 trillion Kenya shillings for Tanzania.

Uganda Finance Minister Maita Kasaija proposed a revenue and spending estimate of 45.5 trillion Ugandan shillings for the upcoming 2020/2021 financial year.

Security was allocated 4.5 trillion Ugandan shillings while Uganda Shillings received 197 billion from the tourism sector, a slight improvement from 193 billion Ugandan Shillings in the financial year 2019/20.

The Ugandan government is required to cut billions of shillings off travel and conferences, and ensure productive ministries, departments , and agencies as it seeks funding of 11 trillion shillings to run the budget for 2020/21.

In Tanzania Dr. Philip Mpango the finance mister tabled the final budget of the first five years of the administration of President John Magufuli.

Dr Mpango announced plans to spend Tanzanian shilling 34.88 trillion with 21.98 trillion reserved for recurrent spending including, but not limited to, this year’s general election.

Rwanda will increase national spending by 7.5 per cent despite the Coronavirus pandemic that has slowed down economies.

Finance Minister Uzziel Ndagijimana announced a budget increase of 3.7 billion Rwandan francs for the financial year 2020/21 compared with 9 billion Rwandan francs in the fiscal year 2019/20 to 2,9 billion Rwandan francs in the fiscal year 2019/20.

The total resources proposed for fiscal year 2020/21 are estimated at 3.2 billion Rwanda Francs.

This total consists of 1,605.7 billion Rwandan francs of domestic tax and non-tax income, 492.5 billion Rwandan francs of foreign grants and 783.4 billion Rwandan francs of external loans.
