Causes of bush burning

In
time past, even in some instances today, hunters, herdsmen, farmers and
cigarette smokers are the primary recipients of blame for uncontrolled and
indiscriminate bush burning. Most herdsmen believed that bush burning improves
the acceptability and nutritional value of crops and other species. Such as
grasses for browsing and grazing. Some farmers also burn in order to control
dangerous animals, insects, and pests, such as grass hoppers, ticks, locusts
and livestock parasites which live on the vegetation. Fire sometimes can also
be used to create condition suitable for a particular land use system, to
create a habitat for a particular species for recreational purposes or to
promote tourism. Fire is also been used for clearing slash and felling of trees
to create a larger planting area for crops with minimum labour ( Bamigboye
& Moses, 2006).

Other
leading causes of bush burning includes;
i.
Indiscriminate
throwing of burning cigarette butt (culprit) on bush side. This can lead to
indiscriminate bush burning as a result of human carelessness for example from
discarded cigarette butt.
ii.
Indiscriminate
setting of fire by honey harvesters. The setting of this fire requires dry wood
and a lighters which is mostly carried out at night. The purpose in which the
harvesters set its fire in a particular place may come in contact with dry
leaves and this result to bush burning.
iii.
Agricultural
activities: Bush burning before planting is a practice carried out by farmers
overtime during cultivation. The process of burning the dry leaves, may extend
to other portion of the land or heaped mulches which may result to massive fire
destroying other plants and animals.
iv.
Road
traffic accident: accident can occur as a result of traffic jam and when bushes
are close to the road, this can leads to indiscriminate bush burning because
fuel are used to power the cars and can be caught up with fire when over heated
or as a result of accident.
v.
Occasional
campfire: this occasional camp fire can be set up by soldiers or scout when
they are out for camp. Camp fire are never quench and as a result of this
attitude the fire can accidentally caught up with dry leaves and spread
indiscriminately.
vi.
Irresponsibility
of local population
vii.
Lightening
