Taxi driver in court for alleged kidnapping of 10 children

Police arraigned a 25-year-old taxi driver, Kenneth Edet, at an Area Court in Mpape, Abuja, on Wednesday for supposedly kidnapping 10 kids.

Police charged Mr Edet who lives in Mpape with one count of kidnapping.

Edwin Ochayi, the prosecutor, informed the court that the case was reported on June 22 at the Mpape Police Station.

Mr Ochayi declared that some citizens apprehended the defendant when they heard a sound coming from his vehicle on a burial ground in Mashafa Village.

He said the children were between the ages of 12 and 18.

Mr Ochayi said the defendant was unable to offer a satisfactory response as to where he was taking them to during the police investigation.

The offense, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 272 of the Penal Code.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the accusation.

The judge, Salihu Ibrahim, allowed the defendant to bail in the amount of N300,000 with one security in the same amount.

Mr Ibrahim instructed the surety to be sensible and reliable.

He also instructed that the surety to deposit his or her identity card for verification at the court registry.

Mr Ibrahim adjourned the case for hearing until July 24.
