seeking a proven bilingual leader to become our Head of Communications and
Digital Mobilization. The ideal candidate will be prepared to build a vision of
how our public communications and engagement can continue to raise the profile
of the issues we work on, inspire people, and provoke positive change. They
will also have experience identifying and reacting to media and digital
opportunities, using data to drive decision-making, and a passion for telling great
stories.
Bob
Hunter, the first President of Greenpeace, and a journalist and intellectual,
coined the phrase “mind bombs” to refer to the use of powerful media to spark
ideas and transform minds, eventually shifting our collective society. Creative
communication, integrating the latest technologies, mediums and trends, has
been an essential part of Greenpeace’s impact. Now the world is facing its
greatest ever threat: climate change. It has never been more important to
communicate bigger and bolder, and bring people together.
In
the role of Head of Communications and Digital Mobilization you will be
contributing to a dynamic global movement that is making real change happen.
The historic outcome of the Paris climate talks, the Keystone XL pipeline
cancellation, and the cap on Alberta tar sands emissions: all of these
promising developments in the fight against climate change were thanks to
movements of inspired and dedicated people, advocating and campaigning at many
levels these past years. You’ll be joining a passionate team spread out across
Canada with offices in Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver, and be part
of a global organization that has over 40 years of experience in advocacy,
activism and creative communications. Join us!
MAJOR
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Planning,
    implementing and evaluating the national communications and digital
    mobilization program, including strategies, budgets, objectives and
    milestones
  2. Providing
    vision and leadership for a dynamic program within GPC that is continuing
    to change and develop.
  3. Recruiting,
    managing and motivating team members as well as establishing objectives
    and work-plans for staff in the unit.
  4. Overseeing
    communications on all GPC channels including the website and social media
    to ensure quality and consistency of all GPC communications products
    including press releases, press statements, reports, photo, video, audio,
    supporter communications, and digital content.
  5. Implementing
    efficient and effective approvals process for communications products
    while ensuring strong communications principles are incorporated into
    project planning across the organization.
  6. Ensuring
    rigorous risk assessment as relates to communications and public relations
    for GPC.
  7. Developing
    effective evaluation and reporting mechanisms for all aspects of
    communications and digital mobilization, including the development and
    reporting of key performance indicators.
  8. Ensuring
    delivery of fundraising goals included as part of the digital mobilization
    program.
  9. Supporting
    the implementation of the project model, including participating in the
    set-up and oversight of project teams and providing ongoing support to
    project leaders and other project team members.
  10. Representing
    GPC in dealings with other national and regional offices (NROs) and
    Greenpeace International. Building and maintaining relationships with
    other NGOs, grassroots groups, and individuals as related to the
    communications and digital mobilization program.
Required
skills and experience:
  • proven
    experience leading, directing, managing and motivating a diverse team of
    staff in the areas of communication and digital mobilization;
  • previous
    experience in a position which required highly tuned analytical and
    judgment skills;
  • experience
    developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating communications and
    digital mobilization strategies that advance organizational goals;
  • superior
    organizational, administrative and time management skills;
  • previous
    experience leading communication work including campaign and crisis
    communications;
  • proven
    ability to thrive in a highly charged environment in constant evolution;
  • experience
    preparing, monitoring and controlling budget expenditures;
  • significant
    interpersonal and networking skills both verbally and written;
  • knowledge
    of digital mobilization trends and tools;
  • a
    demonstrated commitment to environmental and social justice issues
    including activism;
  • the
    ability to communicate effectively in both English and French is
    essential;
  • knowledge
    and understanding of Greenpeace’s overall goals;
  • excellent
    oral and written communication skills including public speaking and
    presentation skills, as well as strong active listening skills;
You
will work with colleagues in Canada and around the world and you must be able
to travel, including internationally. The ability to work weekends and evenings
is sometimes required.

should understand and support the Greenpeace campaign tactics, including the
