health systems since 2005. PIH/IMB works in close collaboration with the
Government of Rwanda to strengthen the public sector health systems and to
scale up innovative health care delivery models at community, district and
national level, build capacity for the health care workforce, and conduct high
quality operational research.

General
responsibilities:

The Director of Mentorship Education and Training (DMET) is responsible for
ensuring that PIH/IMB is driven by a vision and mission to develop cadres of
health and community workers who focus on responding to the needs of the poor
in society while helping to strengthen national health systems. The primary
role will be to lead a team that innovates, develops and delivers capacity
development approaches that are evidence driven. Currently PIH/IMB has training
programs in global health, community health, NCD’s, Oncology, mental health,
neonatology and research methodology. PIH/IMB in Rwanda works through strong
collaborations with the MOH, Rwanda Biomedical center and University of Rwanda
as well as the University of Global Health Equity.
The
scope of this job is to lead capacity building for medical professionals from
Rwanda and beyond as well as to develop and deliver in-service mentoring and
training to community health workers, nurses, midwives, doctors and other
supportive cadres in Collaboration with the Global Health Delivery Partnership
(GHDP) including Harvard University (Department of Global Health and Social
Medicine- Harvard Medical School), Brigham Women’s (Division of Global health
Equity) and Children’s Hospital (Fellowship program) as well as PIH cross site
team in Boston.
The
department will, in the future, be developing courses for leadership and
management for health professionals. This position is also responsible for
hosting and ensuring that students and residents attached to PIH/IMB learn from
the district platforms where PIH works with the MOH..
Specific
responsibilities:
  • Provide
    the vision and mission for the DMET function within PIH/IMB and build a
    team of passionate individuals to drive programs and innovative capacity
    building approaches
  • Develop
    internal collaborations within PIH/IMB with the medical and community
    programs to support the mentoring, education and training function
  • Supervise
    and implement the integration of Mentorship in the training function at
    PIH IMB using the MESH model.
  • Build
    strong collaborations with partners in Rwanda and abroad and in particular
    align to the needs of MOH/RBC and UoR.
  • Lead
    the development of a strong training administration function that can
    support multiple capacity building initiatives in multiple sites
  • Lead
    the effort to seek and compete for training grants in Rwanda and beyond
    and ensure proper grants management for these grants
  • Lead
    the effort to build capacity of the DMET team to undertake a diversity of
    complex initiatives as well as to find and deploy part time experts and
    consultants
  • Work
    with the district based teams and programs to develop training platforms
    and supportive logistics for hosting students and residents
  • Play
    a co-ordinating role with UGHE to support mutual training programs and
    approaches as well as for faculty development
  • Provide
    strategic and operational support to DMET in the development of the annual
    work-plan and budgets
  • Supervise
    the PIH/IMB Curriculum and Training Specialist responsible for curriculum
    development and overseeing training activities to ensure that IMB-led
    curricula materials and training activities are high quality and used at
    the national level.
  • Supervise,
    teach, and mentor residents and medical students at IMB-supported sites
    during their rotation time at PIH/IMB sites.
  • Actively
    engage the department in Nursing and Midwifery Education
  • Actively
    engage in department relevant operation research
Job
profile requirements:
  • Health
    Professional with extensive experience in Human resources for Health
  • Postgraduate
    training in a medical or education field
  • Experience
    in leading and managing teams in a collaborative style
  • Experience
    in clinical teaching especially in a resource-poor setting
  • Demonstrated
    passion for capacity building for health systems strengthening and proven
    knowledge of adult education learning techniques.
  • Commitment
    to social justice
  • Experience
    in working closely with national ministries and universities will confer
    an advantage
  • Self
    driven, confident and articulate with the ability to work with minimal
    supervision
  • Fluency
    in English and Kinyarwanda; knowledge of French a plus.
  • Computer
    skills including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Internet
    and Email.
  • Strong
    communication, administrative, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness
    to be based in rural Rwanda with frequent travel to Kigali and other
    PIH/IMB-supported sites.
