MASS
Design Group is a social enterprise architecture firm that seeks to design,
construct and advocate for buildings and environments that improve lives. MASS
immerses itself in the challenges our partners and their constituents face and
develops solutions that are optimized to improve health, economic, and social
outcomes. In East Africa, MASS is currently involved with policy work at the
Ministry of Health, the design and construction of several health care facilities
and schools for partners such as Partners In Health, the African Wildlife
Foundation and MASS General Hospital, as well as a new training center and
workshop for the next generation of socially minded architects.

Position Overview
The
Design Associate will be based in Kigali. Design Associates will have the
opportunity to participate as a member of a team tackling unique design
problems across the globe and should be interested in contributing to every
component of the design process and operations of MASS. The design associate
will have the chance to work on a variety of challenging projects during the
course of the fellowship where s/he will work alongside exciting partners that
range from governmental ministries to international development agencies and
small grassroots organizations. The position requires working closely with
experienced project managers and being involved in all phases, including early
stage research, schematic design, and construction administration. The fellow
will gain experience in thinking critically and apply new methods of health
centric thinking throughout the design and building process to help MASS
improve lives through our buildings.

Responsibilities
- Work
directly under project managers and associates to meet design deliverables
on schematic, design development, and construction documents - Spend
time on site immersions preparing feasibility reports and / or overseeing
construction - Work
on local design competitions and RFP submissions - Assist
in the daily tasks of running an International NGO in East Africa
including operations and development
Required Skills and Experience
- Degree
in architecture, landscape, or urban planning - Experience
with Adobe Suite and Auto Cad
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Masters
in Architecture - Interest
in global health - Experience
living abroad - Humility
and the ability to jump into a startup culture - Great
interpersonal and communication skills - Ability
to travel throughout East Africa to project sites, at times on short
notice
Fellowship Logistics
During
the fellowship year, all fellows are provided with:

living stipend of $650/month - Housing

professional development grant of $600 - An
award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year - Travel
costs covered to and from placement site, training and retreats

Living
and Working in Rwanda: All fellows are provided with housing
and utilities during the fellowship year. Housing situations vary based on the
placement organization and location within the country. Fellows at MASS Design
reside in separate living quarters at the MASS Office in downtown Kigali, an
urban center and capital of Rwanda.
