The International
Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Project Leader –
Livestock Scientist to manage a project on crop-livestock integration (CLiP) in
Central Africa. The project is funded by IFAD and EC, implemented jointly by
ILRI and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and will
run to the end of 2018. The project will be carried out in Eastern DR Co
ngo (By
IITA at their field station in Bukavu) and either Burundi or Rwanda, depending
on the security situation in Burundi that unfolds over the coming months. This
position as leader of the CLiP project will be therefore be based in either
Bujumbura or Kigali. The project will be implemented in close collaboration
with other senior project staff and the technical advisory group; ensuring full
integration with the Humidtropics CRP and with other ILRI and IITA activities
in the Great Lakes Region.

partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security
and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these
research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm
animals’ alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm
productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the

Responsibilities:
- Coordinate
the IFAD/EC project in East DR Congo and Burundi in close collaboration
with other senior project staff and the Technical Advisory Group; ensuring
full integration with the Humidtropics CRP. - Take
full responsibility for the management of the project and for all
technical and financial management reporting to IFAD and EC; to ILRI and
to the Humidtropics CRP. - Supervise
all technical and administrative staff associated with the project. - Lead
and conduct research on livestock science and integration of livestock
production into crop-livestock farming systems in Eastern DR Congo and
Burundi/Rwanda in close cooperation with project technical staff,
development partners, national research systems, and other relevant
stakeholders. - Facilitate
the implementation of project activities in Burundi/Rwanda (in close
cooperation with the scientist on food science/nutrition who will be based
in East DR Congo) within the context of Humidtropics partnership
arrangements. - (Co)
supervise PhD and MSc students. - Build
capacity of partners to engage in livestock science and integration of
livestock production into crop-livestock farming systems activities. - Communicate
research results to various audiences and in various forms, with specific
focus on top quality, peer-reviewed journals. - Collaborate
with CGIAR centers and other research institutes to support and enhance
project outputs and develop synergies with other projects to maximize
impact. - Promote
and support cross-institutional and inter-disciplinary teams. - Engage
with other ILRI staff and projects operating in the Great Lakes Region and
beyond.
Requirements:
- The
candidate will ideally have a PhD in livestock science or a related
discipline relevant to the skills listed above (the covering letter should
expand on the relevance of your skill-set). - The
candidate will ideally have at least 5 years’ experience in sub-Saharan
Africa or other relevant region. - Expert
knowledge of livestock production (feeding, breeding, health) with a focus
on the integration of livestock with crop production in mixed
crop-livestock systems in sub-Saharan Africa. - Knowledge
and experience of working with livestock agribusiness and marketing would
be highly beneficial. - A
commitment to connecting research to development to generate impact at
scale. - Excellent
leadership skills and demonstrated experience in managing large, complex
research for development projects would be advantageous. - Understanding
of gender and social inclusion issues and experience with ways of
addressing these in research for development programs in order to promote
equality of opportunity and outcomes. - Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, experience working and interacting
effectively with a variety of stakeholders (farmers, extension workers and
other service providers, public and private sector entities, national programs),
and demonstrated ability to collaborate well across disciplines and with
key collaborative institutions and agencies. - Strong
publication record in peer reviewed journals. - The
successful candidate will have fluent written and spoken English and a strong
command of spoken and written French would be a considerable advantage.
Post
location:The
position will be based either in Bujumbura, Burundi or in Kigali, Rwanda. The
choice will depend on the post-election security situation in Rwanda. It is
essential that you indicate in your covering letter which your preference would
be and if you would not be prepared to move to Burundi.

Duration: 3 years with the possibility
of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
