Partners In
Health/Inshuti Mu Buzima is a Harvard-affiliated international NGO that has
partnered with the Government of Rwanda to strengthen the health system and
support poverty reduction initiatives in rural Rwanda since 2005. PIH/IMB is
seeking outstanding candidates for the following positions. Female candidates

Position
Title: Mixed Method Research Officer
Reports to:
IMB research director / associate director, project principal investigator /
research coordinator.
Location:
Cross-site, which includes Burera, Southern Kayonza, or Kirehe districts
(depending on the assignment and subject to change)

Background:
Since being
invited in 2005 by the Rwandan government to work in the country, Partners In
Health (PIH)/ Inshuti Mu Buzima (IMB) has endeavored to conduct and support
research linked to its experience of accompanying the Ministry of Health (MoH)
in serving the neediest patients in three rural districts. The research
department in particular supports operational research on the PIH model of
care, which is in line with the IMB Research Priority Areas: health service
delivery, health workforce, health information systems, access to essential
medicines, health systems financing, and leadership and governance. This is
translated into action to improve service provision in our communities,
allowing us and others to build on our experience and advocate on behalf of health
care and social justice for the poor. The IMB Research Department is strongly
committed to building the capacity of IMB staff and MoH partners to conduct
quality research from conception to dissemination. This is achieved through
increasing opportunities for training, research support, and opportunities for
meaningful engagement in research.
Expectations
for the position:
The Research
Officer (RO) will be responsible for assisting the research department with
carrying out activities related to its different ongoing studies. Under the
direction of the department and relevant research teams, they will be involved
in conducting research using quantitative or qualitative methods. Related data
collection activities could include but are not limited to: focus groups,
structured surveys, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, etc.
We are looking for someone with a versatile range of research skills, so that
they might participate in a diversity of projects. Experience working in a
hospital setting or on large scale data collections (for example, the
Demographic Health Survey) is desirable.
The RO’s
responsibilities will go beyond data collection and will also include data
management, transcription, entry and cleaning, as well as some basic quantitative
and qualitative analysis. The RO will participate in professional development
activities including Research Seminars and staff meetings and could also be
asked to train others. The RO will be involved in projects that work around
sensitive health issues and work with vulnerable populations. They should be
comfortable and experienced with work of this nature. They should also be
familiar with principles of ethical conduct of research, and any training
specifically related to research ethics is a plus. The RO must have strong
language and communication skills (oral and written) in English and
Kinyarwanda. They will be expected to contribute to drafting progress and
results reports. Experience with translation between English and Kinyarwanda is
an asset, and professional accreditation is preferred. Finally, the RO must
show a strong commitment to health and social justice and be comfortable
working with rural communities.
Education
and skills required:
  • A0 diploma or A1 (bachelor’s degree) in
    research related field.
  • Interview experience (minimum 6 months) and at
    least 2 years of public health research experience encompassing a broad
    range of tasks;
  • strong interpersonal and communication skills,
    including the ability to interact comfortably and communicate effectively
    with members of clinical teams, patients, families and community members;
  • strong organizational skills and excellent
    attention to detail;
  • flexibility, independence, organization and
    creativity;
  • ability to learn basic information and
    terminology regarding health issues and health systems in a short amount
    of time;
  • fluency in English; fluency in Kinyarwanda;
    proficiency in French
  • familiarity with Microsoft office applications
