TITLE: Research and M&E Volunteer
UNIT: Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation
DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager

SFH/Rwanda conducts research, monitoring and evaluation activities to provide
information needed to make evidence-based decision regarding program design,
implementation and impact evaluation. Research, monitoring, and Evaluation
(RM&E) activities to be performed by SFH/Rwanda includes quantitative
studies (household / population-based surveys, target group surveys and GIS
mapping activities) as well as qualitative studies (in-depth interviews,
pre-test and post-test of communications materials, brand promotion, and
others). RM&E activities also include program performance, program quality
assurance, and donor reporting.

Currently SFH/Rwanda is seeking RM&E two Volunteers for a minimum of three
months who are seeking hands-on, practical, research-related and monitoring and
evaluation experience. The exact duration of this volunteer opportunity can be
negotiated. SFH/Rwanda´s Volunteers will be mentored to learn various aspects
of SFH’s RM&E methodologies. As such, the RM&E Volunteers will receive
practical on-job training and learn SFH´s evidence-based decision-making
approach to its social marketing and behavior change communications for health.

SUMMARY OF VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY
Volunteers are expected to accomplish the following:
• Understanding social marketing and communication for health approaches as
well as behavior change programs and related research/evaluation methodologies
and tools;
• Developing research protocols and designing questionnaire;
• Supervising quantitative and GIS mapping data collection activities and
ensuring data quality;
• Entering quantitative data using PDAs, EpiInfo and/or SPSS;
• Entering programmatic data into M&E tools;
• Cleaning data using Excel and/or SPSS;
• Analyzing data using SPSS;
• Writing research reports and preparing research presentations as needed;
• Data triangulation;
• Contribute to writing donor reports;
• Reading/reviewing and organizing RM&E electronic and paper files;
• Learning and completing other administrative and logistical duties related to
RM&E activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in (applied) statistics, applied mathematics
or public health;
• No previous work experience is required, but relevant past experience in
RM&E may be an asset and a degree with Distinction is an added advantage;
• Some quantitative data analysis skills using SPSS is an added advantage;
• Fluency/proficiency in written and spoken communication skills in English and
Kinyarwanda;
• Proven computer skills in Microsoft Office and general use of internet search
engines;
• Interest in HIV/AIDS prevention, child survival, malaria prevention, sexual
reproductive health, and family planning programs;
• Ability to work under strict deadlines;
• Flexibility to travel outside of Kigali;
• Demonstrated professionalism and ability to communicate effectively with
local authorities;
• Ability to work effectively with an interdisciplinary and international team.

Candidate volunteering will be highly motivated, proactive, organized
individuals who are able to articulate into the SFH research agenda.

STATUS:
This is an unpaid volunteering opportunity, but SFH will cater for relevant
expenses during fieldwork.
