VSO Sign Language Education Adviser Job Vacancy in Rwanda

change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. This is an exciting opportunity to work with RNUD to promote the human rights of people who are deaf, to make quality services accessible including education and health, and to develop the capacity of RNUD at national and grassroots level.

What does the role involve?
You will work with the RNUD to build the capacity of staff in the use, training, and mainstreaming of sign language.

To do this you will:
• Work with the Sign Language Programme Coordinator to support the development of a second level course to teach Sign Language using the signs from the Rwandan Sign Language Dictionary (a first level course is already in place)
• Develop courses and training materials to increase the skills of Sign Language interpreters
• Capacity build staff in planning fundraising and writing proposals
• Develop an annual plan for Sign Language
• Develop an advocacy plan to promote the acceptance of Rwandan Sign Language
• Support staff in communicating and networking with other NGOs
• Capacity build staff in report writing and monitoring and evaluation

Skills, qualifications and experience required
You’ll have a Level 2 British Sign Language qualification (or a relevant equivalent) and experience of using sign language within the deaf community. You’ll also have experience in sign language education and interpreter training. Through your work you will have a good understanding of deaf culture and working with deaf associations and communities. If you have this type of experience working in a developing country then this would be ideal. Through your professional experience you will have designed and managed projects and have experience of training and/or coaching. You’ll be a patient and flexible person, open to others opinions and views and able to work with a range of people. You’ll be a problem solver with a practical and proactive approach with the ability to motivate others.

You’ll be based in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. This is a voluntary placement. We’ll ask you to commit 12-24 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country we’ll help you resettle and we’ll invite you to stay involved with us through campaigning, development awareness raising and fundraising.
