Salary: up to £72,936 per annum + 25% gratuity + lower tax rates

A Barrister or Solicitor with a minimum of seven years’ general civil and criminal litigation and advocacy experience, is sought to be sole resident judicial figure in the Falkland Islands. Previous judicial experience would be a distinct advantage.

The Falkland Islands have a common law jurisdiction and a written Constitution, and the jurisdiction of the Magistrate’s Court extends to South Georgia, South Sandwich and the British Antarctic Territory. The Magistrate’s Court has criminal jurisdiction generally equivalent to a Crown Court (but with a summary procedure) and civil jurisdiction roughly equivalent to a County Court. The holder of this post will also have Coroner’s duties and will be required to act as judge of the Supreme Court when the Chief Justice (non resident) is not available.

Appointment will be on contract for a period of two years, with the possibility of extending, commencing in November 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter. In addition to salary we offer a relocation grant, flights at the beginning and end of the contract, 6 weeks holiday, one mid term contract flight, favourable tax rates and allowances.
