Sanchez strikes again to bring Chile to the quarter-finals of Copa America

At the Copa America in Brazil, Chile’s forward Alexis Sanchez continued his resurgent form by scoring the winning goal in Friday’s 2-1 win over Ecuador.

The victory shot the holders into the competition’s quarter-finals.

With Jose Fuenzalida volleying into the net, Chile took the lead in the eighth minute.

But when goalkeeper Gabriel Arias clattered Jhegson Mendez, Ecuador was awarded a penalty kick, allowing Enner Valencia to level off the spot in the 26th minute.

Sanchez, who finished a barren five-month spell by scoring against Japan in Monday’s 4-0 victory, placed Chile ahead in the second half early.

He did so by using one touch to expertly guide a bouncing cross into the net.

Once again, Ecuador rarely threatened and saw defender Gabriel Achilier receiving a straight red card for a rash attack on Arturo Vidal, which had to be removed.

In 2015 and 2016, Chile, champions of Copa America, led Group C on six points.

Uruguay’s second at four with Japan’s third at one and Ecuador’s bottom at no points.
