The wife of a lecturer at the Niger Delta University (NDU) was kidnapped at Gbarantoru community in Yenagoa on Sunday.
Community sources revealed the incident occurred early on Sunday and sporadic shots were fired by the gunmen to announce their arrival.
The gunmen reportedly entered the community in a speedboat through River Nun and headed to the lecturer’s residence, identified simply as Dr. Charles.
A resident, who pleaded not to be named for fear of being targeted, said the gunmen missed their target, who escaped, prompting them to whisk away his wife, whom they took off in their boat.
The resident said that a few minutes after the shooting, youth from the community mobilized to the crime scene just to see the lecturer emerge from where he was hiding.
Asinim Butswat, the spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, confirmed the command was aware of the incident and was on the abductors ‘ trail.
“Yes, I heard about the incident and the police began investigating to apprehend the perpetrators and rescue the victim,” Mr Butswat said.
