Kidnapped Nigerian doctor, Ogbonna Uchenna-Aju regains his freedom

Ogbonna Uchenna-Aju, a physician kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Cross River on May 3, has regained freedom.

Mr Uchenna-Aju was kidnapped from Ogoja Local Government Area to his home in Obudu Local Government Area in the state during transit.

The announcement of his release is contained in a communiqué signed on Sunday in Calabar by the chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, South-South Zone, Agam Ayuk, and the secretary, Ezoke Epoke.

The association said Mr Uchenna-Aju was released on May 9 safely through government, security agencies, and media efforts.

“The NMA in Cross River has suspended the notice of total and indefinite withdrawal of medical services across the state, stemming from the meeting and taking serious account of Cross Riverians ‘ healthcare needs.

“The association also directed all its members throughout the state to immediately resume work.”

“The association will maintain its resolution of 8 January 2018 in case of the kidnapping of a doctor or dependent stating that’ the NMA will henceforth withdraw all medical services without notice whenever a doctor or dependent is captured in the future.”

The association urges the government of the state and security agencies to do more to protect the state’s life and property.
