As the Super Eagles file in their first game against Burundi Saturday at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019), held in Egypt, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered them to play every game for motherland’s honor.
The president encouraged them to raise Nigeria’s flag high in a press statement on Saturday, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a football powerhouse on the continent.
“I will be watching, just as millions of Nigerians would also do. You have our solid support, and we will cheer you to victory,” President Buhari said.
He observed that football is a powerful unifying force for Nigerians and encouraged the Super Eagles to deliver a relaxing balm to the country’s many problems that the state faces with everything at its disposal.
“Nigerians are known for their unconquerable spirit. Show this in the group stages, and even beyond. Nothing but lifting of the diadem is good enough for our country,” President Buhari stated.
He also asked the Super Eagles to be aware of fair play and sporty behavior as they strive to go back with the AFCON trophy.
