The 2025 ATP Tour season comprises 60 tournaments in various countries. Some of these are ATP 500 tournaments. Two ATP 500 events take place in Basel and Vienna at the same time of the year. They will be held from October 20 to 26, 2025. The Swiss Indoors Basel takes place in Basel, Switzerland, and the Erste Bank Open happens in Vienna, Austria.

What Are the ATP 500 tournaments?

Below the Grand Slams and Masters 1000 events are the ATP 500 tournaments. Top players must participate in at least four of these tournaments a year to keep their ATP ranking. Singles champions earn 500 ATP ranking points at these events. Players with higher rankings earn entry into larger events, and they continue to strive for a higher position in the Pepperstone ATP rankings. Winners of ranking points must defend those points the following year at the same event.

Swiss Indoors Basel

St. Jakobshalle in Basel hosts this event in Switzerland and has been held there since 1970. This is Roger Federer’s hometown, and out of the 13 times he made it to the finals, he won 10 times. Some other former champions are Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. The first-ever Swiss player to win the event was Michael Burgener. Ivan Lendl won in 1980 and 1981. Stefan Edberg won three times.

At the event, you can watch an exciting mix of top players and rising stars. Taylor Fritz, world number five, will be playing. The Danish player, Holger Rune, will be another headline attraction. Norwegian Casper Ruud, a finalist at many Grand Slams, will also be playing. It will be a debut at Basel for 18-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca. French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard defeated Ben Shelton of the USA in the 2024 final.

Some places to visit in Basel, while not watching tennis, include Altstadt (Old Town) and its historical buildings. The Kunstmuseum Basel is one of the oldest public art collections. Explore the Spalentor, a medieval gate, and visit the Tinguely Foundation in front of the Theater Basel.

Erste Bank Open

The Erste Bank Open will take place at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria. There are so many things to do in Vienna besides watch tennis. It is interesting to stroll through the historic city and relax with a coffee and cake in one of the traditional cafes. It is also amazing to see top tennis players in action, and the winner of this event is almost always a top 10 player.

Five players from the top 10 ATP rankings have confirmed their participation. Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev will draw in the crowds. Brit Jack Draper won the event in 2024. He will be back this year, and if he can defend his title, he will be the first player to do so at the Erste Bank Open. Daniil Medvedev will be back. He won the event in 2022 and was a finalist in 2023.

You may decide to extend a trip to Austria for tennis and go on to try Croatia. You can have an affordable vacation there and enjoy the country’s mix of ancient history and natural beauty.

The draw and prize money

The draw for both events includes 32 singles players and 16 doubles players. Draws are all random, outside of predetermined slots for seeds. The top seeds don’t play against each other until the later rounds of the tournament.

Players play on hard surfaces at both venues, which makes the games very fast. The indoor courts in Basel allow servers to be more accurate without the effects of wind or sun. For the players, it is a crucial stage of the year when they are aiming to qualify for the year-end championship.

The prize money for the events is different. It is €2,523,045 for the event in Basel and €2,736,875 for the one in Vienna.
