Nigerian minister tests positive for COVID-19

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has tested coronavirus positive.

According to him, he was reported to be positive on Saturday, after his fourth test. The Minister went to Twitter on Sunday afternoon to announce his health status.

“Did my fourth Covid-19 test yesterday at the first sign of a throat irritation and unfortunately this time it came back positive. That is life! Win some lose some. Heading for isolation in a health facility and praying for the best. #StayHomeSaveLives #COVID19 #PTFCOVID19”, he wrote.

Mr Onyeama is a member of the list of prominent Nigerians who have contracted the virus. Previously, Governors Rotimi Akeredolu, Nasir El-Rufai, Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed and Okezie Ikpeazu have tested positive for the disease.

Other than officials who tested positive and recovered from the virus, several people died from complications caused by the virus.

The latter group includes the former Chief of Staff of President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, and the former Governor of the State of Oyo, Abiola Ajimobi.

As of the time of this report, 36,107 people had contracted the virus in Nigeria, out of which 14,938 people had recovered and were discharged while 778 died.

Lagos remains the epicenter of the disease in Nigeria, accounting for more than a third (13,341) of the total cases.

While Nigeria continues to report new cases in hundreds, the nation is opening up its economy more daily, though people continue to disobey the government’s guidelines on social distance and the use of face masks in public.
