Nature and scope

YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre is a year round operation, opened 7 days a week,
which delivers outdoor education programs to school groups, youth and adult
retreats, a day camp and an overnight camp focused on leadership development
during the summer months. The centre also operates a vegetable farm and
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.

Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Farm Worker is responsible for planning
and carrying out the day to day operations of the fruit and vegetable farm and
the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) system with the key objective to
maximize productivity while utilizing organic farming practices. The position
aids in delivering the highest quality farm education programs to outdoor
education and summer camp participants that align with the overall mission,
vision and values of the YMCA.

Responsibilities
• Helps implement the annual farm plan, with the Farm Team Leader, by planting
seedlings in the greenhouse, transplanting, maintaining and harvesting
successions of vegetables on our 1.5 acre market garden.
• Tracks and record all farm related activities in farm log. Provides support
to Farm Team Leader in monitoring planting calendar and budget.
• Ensures that the daily operation of the farm is carried out (i.e. tilling,
planting, irrigating, weeding, harvesting, washing and to market) according to
organic practices.
• Sets up produce for onsite farm stand, organises CSA shares pick-ups, and
brings vegetables to sell at some of YMCA of Greater Toronto’s Health and
Fitness centres. Completes inventory of all produce sold and remaining.
• Directs and coordinates interns, member farmers and volunteers to ensure
effective and successful group work on the farm.
• Provides leadership and support with farm camp activities and school group
programming. Implements lesson plans as outlined and provided.
• Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and
Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach
to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association.
Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
• Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report
suspected child abuse to Children’s Aid Society.
• Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates
the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members,
volunteers, donors and staff.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
• Formal or informal training in organic agriculture, horticulture, gardening,
landscaping, or a related field
• Minimum 2 full seasons of practical skill application on a small-scale farm
• Demonstrated experience in environmental education, outdoor or science camp,
or other teaching positions
• Demonstrated leadership in providing superior customer service and ability to
build successful relationships with people working on the farm
• Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to
establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and
volunteers
• Excellent written communication skills
• Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and
racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
• Routinely perform hard physical labour on a regular basis
• Flexibility to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays
• Must have access to a vehicle. YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre is not
accessible by public transit
• Standard first aid and CPR
