The Special needs education adviser volunteer placement has been specifically
created to support a project funded by the UK Department for International
Development/UKAid under the Innovation for Education programme in Rwanda.
The
project is called ‘Inclusive Futures’, and is led by Handicap International and
delivered in partnership with VSO. The ‘Inclusive Futures’ project is aimed at
establishing and testing a national set of Standards, Norms, Tools and Roles to
provide better access to education for all children, regardless of need.
What does the role involve?
You’ll provide technical support to two special
centres in the target Districts of Kamonyi and Rubavu and surrounding mainstream
schools and communities to apply and test a set of Standards, Tools, Roles and
Norms for the education of children with disabilities and other special
education needs. To do this you will:

•promote and build capacity of care providers and
teachers in two special needs centres Kamonyi and Rubavu

•employ learner-centred methods, support child
participation and cooperative learning, use teaching and learning aids and
devices, use appropriate technologies according to identified needs, assess the
needs of children and develop and deliver individual learning plans

•use a variety of facilitation and consultative

Skills, qualifications and experience required
You will have a degree level qualification in
education, plus professional qualifications and/or training in an area of
special needs education. You’ll have at least 3 years experience working in
special needs education and inclusive education. Your experience includes
applying a set of standards within an agreed framework and managing change in
an educational context. You’ll be knowledgeable in developing and delivering
training sessions, including people from different backgrounds and varying
capacity. You’ll be fluent in English, however French language skills are
desirable for working with centre staff. You’ll be a sensitive worker, able to
communicate well with a variety of stakeholders, experienced in learner-centred
training methods and child participation. You’ll be creative in use of
resources, able to use your initiative, work independently and build a strong
sense of solidarity with your team.

You will be based in Kigale, the capital of Rwanda,
but have travel to the two centres in Kamonyi and Rubavu. We’ll ask you to
commit to at least 16 months to make a sustainable contribution to our
development goals. In return, we’ll provide you with extensive training before
your placement, and our financial package includes a local living allowance,
return flights and accommodation. When you return to your home country, we’ll
support you to resettle.
