Needs adviser, Rwanda
Background
The Special
education needs adviser will be based with local partner, Tubakunde, under a
project funded by UKAid; INSPIRED! (Inclusive Services through Participation of
stakeholders for realising Rights in Education & Disability). The project focuses
on national advocacy, civil society development and service improvements.
Tubakunde have developed a project aimed at modeling good practice in the
education of children with disabilities, in direct response to new government
legislation to be issued by the end of 2013 setting standards for centres for
children with special needs.
What does the role
involve?
• Coach local
colleagues in appropriate and effective care and education of children with
special needs, e.g: learner-centred methods, child participation and
cooperative learning, appropriate teaching and learning aids and devices,
appropriate technologies according to identified needs, needs assessment and
delivery of individual learning plans
• Model:
facilitation of large and small group teacher training, 1:1 consultation and
support with teachers, lessons, classroom observations, completion of
monitoring and evaluation requirements
• Provide support
and coaching to the local Project Coordinator in project management,
particularly monitoring and evaluation.
• Ensure monitoring
and evaluation systems effectively support the project and are well maintained
and develop good practice
• Keep excellent
records of the testing of methods and approaches.
Skills,
qualifications and experience required
You’ll have a
relevant degree level qualification, plus professional experience working with
children with special needs and their families and carers.
You’ll have
experience designing and delivering tailored training programmes and providing
support identified through needs assessment.
You’ll have good
experience of monitoring and evaluating services to children.
You’ll be fluent in
English, however French language skills are desirable.
You’ll be sensitive to the needs of people
with disabilities, possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, and
be dynamic, creative and an excellent facilitator.

You’ll be based in
Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, working with local NGO Tubakunde.
We’ll ask you to commit
to at least 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development
goals.
In return, we’ll
provide you with extensive training before your placement, and our financial
package includes a local living allowance, return flights and accommodation.
When you return to
your home country, we’ll support you to resettle.
