PhD
scholarship – Shakespeare studies
20 April 2016
A PhD scholarship is
available for a student with a literary studies, computer science or statistics
background to join the Shakespeare Folio project at the University of
Newcastle, Australia.
The Shakespeare
First Folio is arguably the most important document in English literature, but
important questions about the texts it includes remain in dispute. This
ARC-funded project, led by Professor Hugh Craig,
is using statistical methods to date rival versions, detect patterns of
authorial revision compared to random textual corruption, and measure the
closeness or divergence between different versions. The findings will have an
impact on the wording and presentation of plays read and heard by millions
world-wide.
The successful
candidate will be a member of the Centre
for Literary and Linguistic Computing and the Centre for 21st
Century Humanities at Newcastle, and will join a global network of
computational stylistics researchers.
Applicants will have
a background in literary studies, computer science, or statistics.
