This position has a start date of September 28, 2015 and an anticipated end
date of July 1, 2016, with the possibility of extension.
Launched in 2009, the Office of Sustainability informs and inspires students,
staff and faculty to adopt sustainable practices. We promote sustainability on
campus by:
• Delivering projects that build sustainability skills and knowledge
• Connecting people to information, experts, tools and funding options
• Profiling and promoting campus initiatives and successes
• Crafting effective campus and community partnerships
• Co-building action-oriented campaigns and outreach projects
• Sharing ways to incorporate sustainability into studies, teaching and
research
The Outreach Assistant reports jointly to both Program Leads – Outreach and
Engagement at the Office of Sustainability. Outreach Assistants will help
support existing programs and create new initiatives.
Duties
• Supports program planning and development through comprehensive assessment,
research and reviews of best practices of relevant sustainability initiatives
• Assists in coordinating sustainability interns and volunteers, event
logistics, project planning, implementation, evaluating and reporting
• Develops and implements outreach strategies for targeted groups and assists
in the scheduling, organizing and delivery of special events that may include:
Sustainability Awareness Week, Sustainability Speaker Series, Student
Sustainability Summit, Earth Hour, Eco Move Out, etc.
• Promotes and delivers the “One Simple Act on Campus” commitment campaign
• Develops tools and facilitates programs that promote sustainable behaviours
amongst students, faculty and staff
• Writes information resources related to sustainable practices, policies and
programs on campus
• Develops content for use on websites, Facebook pages, blog, online calendars
and more
• Works with others to document and report on sustainable practices at U of A
and other peer universities
Qualifications
• Recent post-secondary graduates, or those who will graduate prior to the
start date of employment, are encouraged to apply
• Current U of A students seeking a cooperative education placement of 8 to 12
months are also encouraged to apply
• Experience with one or more of the following: program development, program
delivery, design and hosting outreach events, delivery of workshops, needs
assessment, evaluation, communications, and sustainability performance
reporting
• Availability to work up to 40 hours per week on a regular schedule, with
occasional evening and weekends for the duration of employment
• Ability to effectively work with and influence students, faculty and staff
related to progress on the University of Alberta’s sustainability goals and
measures
• High degree of flexibility, adaptability and general ability to respond to
emerging opportunities and challenges in a constantly changing environment
• Must be creative and enthusiastic with a high level of energy and initiative
and possess a flair for outreach that inspires and engages students, faculty
and staff
• Excellent written and oral communication skills using a variety of mediums
and forums (email, social media, web, report writing, workshops, outreach
tabling, etc.)
• Self-motivated and able to exercise good judgment in establishing effective
priorities among competing task demands
• Commitment to institutional and societal sustainability
• A strong knowledge of existing sustainability initiatives at the U of A
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to share, receive and apply
constructive feedback
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
