The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is
the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental
issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the
development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment
under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and

Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for ‘sustainable
development’. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological
Diversity . The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of
biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and
equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. The
Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in
Montreal and is administered by UNEP. This post is located in UNEP/SCBD in
Montreal. Under the guidance and supervision of the Executive Secretary, the
incumbent will perform the following tasks:

Responsibilities
a) Develop and maintain a plan for the Secretariat’s
support to mainstreaming the strategic plan with relevant organizations
internationally to advance its implementation, monitoring, assessment and
review;

facilitate contributions to the implementation of the Strategic Plan and

e) Oversee
the preparation and ensure quality of reports for presentation to senior

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or
equivalent) in environmental sciences , sciences, natural resources management,
environmental law , international law or related area. A first level university
degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the

Work Experience
At least 15 years of progressively responsible
experience, including in the field of environment and sustainable development
or related area is required. Profound management experience including resource
management in human resources and financial management, as well as experience
in programme and project planning and analyses is required. Experience in
strategy setting and implementation as well as international negotiations is
required. Work experience in senior officer assignments in an international
organization is highly desirable.
