The
stewardship Intern will participate in all aspects of the project, working
closely with the Conservation Property Manager. The expected results of the
project are: (1) improved know

ledge of TTLT’s lands (including detailed
mapping), (2) strategies for management of threats and enhancement of
biodiversity, (3) monitoring and evaluation programs for stewardship actions,
(4) strategies for engagement of local communities in stewardship, (5)
strategic implementation of management actions to reduce threats on four focal
TTLT properties.

Major
Duties and Responsibilities:
1.
Map and inventory important species (e.g. Species At Risk, rare species) and
threats to biodiversity (e.g. invasive species) on TTLT lands. Organize and
manage data and mapping products. Report data to appropriate agencies (e.g.
Natural Heritage Information Centre).
2.
Develop and implement management strategies for identified threats on a subset
of properties
 
   a. Assist in data collection and preparation of Property Management
Plans
 
   b. Removal of invasive plant species from properties (hand
pulling, cutting using hand tools and pesticide application under proper
supervision)
 
   c.Seed collection, processing and planting
3. Research
and develop effective monitoring programs to track and evaluate stewardship
actions.
4. Engage
local communities in stewardship by organizing work-days and participating in
outreach events.
 
   a. Assisting in the preparation of educational materials and
events (e.g. trail guides, pamphlets, signs, web pages)
 
   b. Working with volunteer property stewards and TTLT staff on
property management tasks as required (e.g.  replacing signs, garbage
removal, assisting with public events)
 
   c. The creation and maintenance of trails and trail
structures
5. Other
duties:
a. 
Maintaining a daily log of  activities and achievements
b. Reporting
project progress to the Conservation Property Manager in a timely manner
c. Creating 
a final report to be delivered to the Executive Director
d. Performing
other similar and related activities as required
Physical
Effort:
  • A
    large part of the job will take place in the field in remote locations
  • Use
    of hand tools (loppers, hand saws, spades etc), physical effort to remove
    invasive species and assisting qualified chainsaw operators and licensed
    pesticide operators will be required.
Qualifications:
  • Must
    be between 18 and 30 years of age (inclusive)
  • Must
    be a graduate of a post-secondary institution (University, College, CEGEP
    (collège d’enseignement général et professionnel), etc.)
  • Must
    be a Canadian Citizen, have permanent Canadian residency status, or have
    been granted refugee status in Canada and are legally entitled to work in
    Canada
  • Cannot
    have participated as an intern in Science Horizons or any other Youth
    Employment Strategy (YES) Career Focus program before
  • Should
    be unemployed
  • A
    valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle with
    appropriate insurance coverage required
  • Basic
    First Aid training and WHMIS certification will be an asset  
Experience:
Previous
experience working with environmental conservation projects preferred.
Abilities
& Skills:
  • Good
    research, synthesis and writing skills
  • Excellent
    oral communication, attentive listening, tact and discretion and
    experience working with staff, volunteers and community partners
  • Physically
    fit enough to do physical labour outdoors in all weathers and conditions
    (e.g. rain, heat, mosquitoes)
  • Good
    knowledge of the flora and fauna of southern Ontario so that invasive
    species or sensitive species (including species at risk), will be
    recognized in the field
  • Familiarity
    with variety of stewardship activities such as invasive species removal
    techniques, survey techniques, seed collecting, etc.
  • Experience
    with mapping tools such as GPS and GIS an asset
  • Personality
    to develop and maintain good working relationships with volunteers
  • Excellent
    planning, organization and time management skills
  •  Attention
    to detail, excellent record keeping and experience with data management
  •  Imagination,
    forethought and sense of humour dealing with unprecedented stewardship
    requirements
