Swansea University Fully-funded PhD Studentship (Welsh Medium Scholarship), UK

About the project:
The College of Human and Health Sciences, Swansea University would like to invite applications for a Welsh-medium scholarship in the field of health ethics to begin on 1 October 2012. This scholarship is funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. Funds are available for up to five years, including three/four years as a
doctoral research student and an extra year as a teaching fellow. Applications are invited from prospective researchers with a background in ethics or philosophy, and health studies. The successful applicant will also be required to undertake some Welsh-medium teaching from the second year of study onwards, as one of the conditions of the scholarship. The final year of the scholarship will be considered a fellowship year, where the teaching commitments will increase.

Area of study
Although applications will be considered from those wishing to study another specific area of health ethics, priority will be given to applications from those wishing to study ethical questions that arise as a result of the bilingual context that exists in Wales. It is envisaged that this would provide an opportunity for study that will consider ethical questions on a macro level, for example to what degree tensions rise due to investment in health services in Welsh, as well as questions on a micro level regarding non Welsh-speaking healthcare professionals and patients who wish to receive care through the medium of Welsh.

The successful candidate will be expected to complete fieldwork in order to collate data and classify the kind of ethical problems raised in the field. The successful candidate will also have to analyse the data from a philosophical point of view, for example, using ethical theories. The scholarship holder will be directed by Professor Steven Edwards and Dr. Andrew Bloodworth, College of Human and Health Sciences.

Candidate eligibility:
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications or strengths:
– An upper second class/first class honours degree in Philosophy or any other relevant subject (by September 2012) or in the middle of completing a masters degree (e.g. in Health Ethics).
-He/she will be able to speak and write in Welsh.
– He/she will be able to show the ability and commitment required to complete a PhD by research within the timeframe of the scholarship.
-He/she will have prepared an outline of ideas for the proposed research project.
– He/she will be in a situation to undertake the College’s Welsh-medium teaching commitments.

Studentship value:
The postgraduate scholarship includes university training costs and also a maintenance grant (the current rate is £13,590 per annum).

How to apply:
Candidates should complete an official application form for postgraduate study in Swansea University. Also, candidates should present a document of no more than 1,000 words outlining the length and breadth of the proposed study, describing the strategy to be used in order to address the questions raised in the thesis.

The official application form is available from Lynsey Thomas, Swansea University Branch Officer, Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, l.a.thomas@swansea.ac.uk and returned by 29 June 2012.
