Main Purpose & Function
The Sustainability Business Relationship Manager is the primary contact for client departments in strategic sustainability matters and is responsible for supporting General Managers and Directors/ Division Heads throughout the City of Vancouver to achieve the City’s environmental sustainability goals and targets. The incumbent provides strategic advice, subject matter expertise, information about best practices, and a connection to external sustainability partners, resources and funding.
The Sustainability Business Relationship Manager leads a team of 2 to 5 advisors and as such, is responsible for people management, mentoring, coaching and career development of the team.
This position reports to the Director of Sustainability and is a key member of the Sustainability Group’s Senior Management team. In this capacity, the Sustainability Business Relationship Manager is responsible for jointly making decisions about the department’s strategy and operations, as well as ensuring the department achieves its goals with respect to strategy, budget, and employee engagement.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The Sustainability Business Relationship Manager, as a strategic partner with business units, provides advice and subject matter expertise to General Managers and Director level staff so that they can develop and deliver out on the environmental sustainability targets and goals.
The Sustainability Business Relationship Manager proactively works with internal clients to ensure that environmental sustainability targets are being met and proactively coordinates across divisions to ensure that opportunities for the efficient integration of sustainability into the City operations are realized.
The Sustainability Business Relationship Manager assesses opportunities to advance City’s sustainability goals to prioritize these for internal and external resource support. The incumbent is responsible for providing advice and subject matter expertise to support the achievement of environmental sustainability targets, managing budgets, ensuring effective evaluation of programs; providing leadership and supervision of staff; and maintaining and managing strong working relationships with the client groups, within the Sustainability Group and across the organization.

Qualifications
A graduate degree in Business, Environmental Science, Engineering, Planning, or a related field plus 7 to 10 years of experience in progressively senior sustainability related roles, and a minimum of three years’ experience managing teams. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. A proven track record of applying Sustainability theory and framework into practice is required.
The successful candidate must have: Comprehensive experience in developing and executing environmental sustainability strategies; expertise in a wide range of environmental sustainability issues; clear and concise verbal and written communication skills; and excellent client service skills. Strong leadership and people management skills are a must. A consistently proven ability to work through others to achieve tangible results is essential. The ability to contribute collaboratively as a member of the Sustainability Group leadership team is essential, as is the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with internal clients and external partners.
