THE LOCATION: The Sunshine Coast is a vibrant community of
approximately 29,000, just a short 40-minute ferry ride from West
Vancouver. The Coast is known for its many outdoor activities and
cultural events in addition to being just a short commute to all the
amenities of a major urban centre.
THE POSITION:
The Sunshine Coast Regional District invites applications for the
position of Zero Waste Coordinator (Full-time). Reporting to the
Manager of Waste Reduction & Recovery, the Zero Waste Coordinator
contributes to the effective planning and operation of the Solid Waste
Program through the development, implementation and monitoring of
plans, policies, program and services required to meet departmental
goals and objectives, with a primary focus on increasing waste
reduction, reuse and recycling in the region.
Candidates must have:
FORMAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING
• Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Resource Management,
Environmental Studies, Civil/Environmental Engineering or related
field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
• Professional certification through the Solid Waste Association of
North America (e.g. Recycling Systems, Landfill Operations, MSW
Collection Systems, MSW Management Systems, Construction & Demolition
Materials Management, etc.) preferred.
• Training in Marketing and Communications, particularly Social
Marketing, an asset.
• Valid BC class 5 driver’s licence
EXPERIENCE
• Minimum of two (2) years work experience in the area of Solid Waste
Management; local government experience preferred.
• Previous work experience developing and implementing educational and
community based social marketing programs an asset.
OTHER SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint (or
other presentation software).
• Knowledge of solid waste management and environmental sustainability
issues and current practices.
• Knowledge of legislation governing the management of Municipal Solid
Waste in British Columbia (i.e. Environmental Management Act and
associated regulations).
• Knowledge of community based social marketing principles and ability
to incorporate these into the development and delivery of education
and outreach programs.
• Working knowledge of research methodology, statistics and
performance analysis and evaluation.
• Effective oral and written communication skills, specifically in the
preparation of reports and public education materials and including
ability to communicate complex technical and/or statistical concepts
to non-technical people.
• Effective interpersonal skills, specifically a demonstrated ability
to proactively develop mutually beneficial working relationships with
colleagues, clients, consultants, contractors and others. Must be a
strong team player.
• Strong negotiating skills, diplomacy and tact.
• Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage
multiple projects and priorities to meet multiple deadlines.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
This is a bargaining unit position with a rate of $31.51 per hour and
includes a full benefit package upon completion of a probationary
